Audiobook of Charles Dickens' Nicholas Nickleby--Only $1.98 in a Whispersync Deal!

Buy the Amazon Kindle ebook Nicholas Nickleby (Penguin Classics edition), by Charles Dickens, for $0.99 and you can get the Audible narration through a Whispersync deal for only $0.99. Total for this deal--$1.98.

The ebook is always inexpensive, and the Audible narration for it is always $0.99, so the Whispersync deal is always a good price. But the Kindle ebook is marked down at the present time, so the deal is even better.

One way that you can look at this deal is that you can get the audiobook for only $1.98, and the ebook and Whispersyncing benefit are thrown in for free. The price for the audiobook alone at Audible--sans any ebook or Whispersyncing--is either $14.95 or $11.99 (there is a discrepancy between Amazon and Audible on this), so this is a really good deal.

And, folks, this is professional narration that we are talking about.

I had never heard of this book of Charles Dickens' before (okay, I admit it--I only knew about A Christmas Story and Bleak House). So, I was surprised to see that 197 reviewers gave an average 4.4 stars at Amazon for this book.

Well, that's about all that I'm going to say. You can go to the webpage for the Amazon Kindle ebook and look around, if you want to. If you decide to buy the deal, you can do it at the webpage, too.

Do you get to download an audiobook when you do this?(on to a computer, iPod like a real audiobook) Or do you just get the whispersync service on a Kindle?

You can download and play the audio book on any device that will play Audible.com books. That includes your computer, and most smart phones. I'm not an Apple person, but I believe that you can somehow transfer Audible files to an iPod. I know you can to my Sanza Clip Zip and most other Sanza models.

FYI, you get this edition, from what I can tell: http://www.amazon.com/Nicholas-Nickleby/dp/B000NIWHV4/ with Simon Vance

Thanks for the correction. The Amazon webpage for the ebook that I posted linked to this edition here at Audible, but it didn't seem right somehow or another.

If you are correct, the Whispersync deal that I posted is an even better value, because the edition that you reference is not $11.99 or $14.95, but $21.95.

FYI--In my research for making the post yesterday, I found an even a cheaper Whispersync deal on the book, but on a different edition. It is only 99 cents. Also, just now I found a Whispersync deal for an edition of Nicholas Nickleby that is the same total price, $1.98. However, it may be the best of the three editions. It is described as a "premium edition" and the book description says:
This is the BEST version of Nicholas Nickleby available for your Kindle. This edition is unabridged and includes the original illustrations from the first publication of this work, by artist Hablot "Phiz" Knight Browne. In addition, this ebook has been meticulously proofed for formatting errors and includes a working Table of Contents with selectable links. Finally, this edition is DRM-free for your convenience.

I'm sure that you will want to take into consideration the narration/narrator of the editions, also, and that may be what ultimately makes the decision for you.

Yes, you can download the audiobook to your hard drive. Alternately, you can stream the audiobook, without downloading it.

If you stream a book, you will need to use one program, whose name that I've forgotten (the reason is that I couldn't get it to work and, after about 20-25 minutes of trying to fix it, the Audible tech person gave up; I uninstalled it). The program that you will need to use to listen to the audiobooks, if you download them, is called "AudibleManager." You can download one or both of the programs from Audible--free, of course. IMHO, it is much more convenient to just stream the audiobooks, when you can.

The audiobooks are ours forever (technically and legally, we don't really own them, but I won't get into that). If we download them, no one can take them away from us (that is unless Jeffrey (Bezos) wants, and can find a way, to hack into our computers in the future and take them away. haha). I am cautious by nature, and while there probably never will be an issue if I don't download them, I feel like I should go ahead and actually download them to my hard drive to be absolutely sure that I will have them "for keeps" (I feel the same way about my ebooks).

As far as getting the audiobooks on to your own device(s) is concerned, I can't really help you there. Other Mobilereaders will be glad to help you, and the archives are a great source of information.

I expect you know this, but for non-audible folk who might not know, keep in mind that Audible audiobooks have DRM. If Audible went out of business, and you had to get a new computer, those audiobooks would not work on it.

I've been using aaxtomp3 to convert them to MP3, just to have a DRM-free backup.

There's also a free Kindle version of the book that qualifies for a $0.99 Audible version for those interested in just the audiobook.

Not sure which Audible version you get. I'm still using a tablet to post on and it's a pain to use.

I want to thank everyone for the well wishes. It's much appreciated

I did learn one thing from this incident - when swinging through the trees with a handful of bananas, never, and I mean never, reach for another banana with the hand holding the vine

Thanks for that information. I was not aware of the DRM/Going out of business issue.

I know that no one can inherit my digital books and audiobooks, like they could physical books and audiobooks. So, as long as Audible doesn't go out of business before I go out of business (if you know what I mean), I won't worry too much.

I'll check out aaxtomp3, though. It seems that I read some post(s) in which people used a plug-in or something with Calibre to do the same thing. Are you familiar with it?

Narrator definitely should be considered for audiobooks (and Vance is a big plus). The one you linked in shows as a $2.99 whispersync price for me, not the $0.99 that the Vance does. If you start from the Vance edition, it links back to the 99 cent Penguin edition (which you had) at 99 cents.

You can also grab the free version (not linked and you have to search for it) and get the Vance edition for 99 cents, as well. However, the formatting isn't quite as good and you lose all the extra info that the Penguin edition has, which is well worth the extra dollar.

ETA: The Penguin edition also contains the illustrations and a working TOC. In addition, there is some background, commentary, footnotes, etc.
