For the benefit of the uninitiated, a Whispersync deal allows you to buy the audio of select Kindle ebooks for a reduced price. The main benefits of having the Whispersync deal are 1) sometimes you can get the Kindle ebook and audiobook for a lower price (sometimes a much lower price) than you can get the audiobook (at Audible) alone, and 2) your Kindle ebook and your audiobook are sync'd together.

About a month and a half ago, I posted a Whispersync deal on Charles Dickens' Bleak House (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...&postcount=446).

There are several editions of this classic at Amazon. This one below is a different one (the Vintage Classics one) than I posted before.

Just yesterday, an author that I was reading from gave what he thought were three of the greatest American fictional books. Bleak House one of them.

The Kindle ebook is currently marked down to $0.99. The Audible narration is $2.99. Therefore, the Whispersync deal is $3.98.

The book, Think BIG and Kick Ass in Business and Life, about (and partially by) Donald J. Trump is marked down to $0.99. You can add the Whispersync audio for only $5.99. So, you can get the whole Whispersync deal for only $6.98.

I'm sure that Donald will talk about himself in his usual humble, self-effacing way (hahahah).

This is a pretty sizable book (386 pages), so the narration will be a pretty good length.

They offer you free audiobooks, but force you to sign up for their free trial in order to get an audiobook. If you forget and let the ending date for the trial period pass, your "free" audiobook has cost you $14.95 (not counting the audiobook that you get with your one(?) credit for the paid month).

For me, they require waaaaaaaay too many hoops to jump through. I need less complications in my life, not more.

I know, I'm being curmudgeonly today.

I remembered to grab almost all of the freebies from audiobooks.com and I didn't sign up for a trial membership. I know I didn't enter any credit card info or even set up a profile...

I went, a couple of times, to their webpages for the audiobook of the week and never did see any way to get the freebie without the trial membership. The information may have been buried somewhere in the bounteous amount of text on the webpages.

In their defense, I did publish how to get the books without an account with the procedure when I first published the promo. As I learned through discussing this on some other boards, you had to have the latest and greatest version of their app to make it work. Got an S6? No problem. Got an older device - you're out of luck! I was lucky I had a fairly new device (a tablet from Christmas) so I could have gotten them without a trial period. I just wanted to have all of the titles in the cloud for potential hard drive-related disasters. As Koland pointed out, even that was not bulletproof (only service I've ever seen that stops providing a title you've paid for if they can no longer sell it).

All in all, I am underwhelmed by their service. Their app is a work in progress. The web site leaves much to be desired. Can't you even just give me a download button on the web page? I'm glad they use a non-DRM format, but overall I'm more likely to give my money to Downpour or to an independent like Tantor. Of course, that's when I've managed to work my way through my current TBR pile, which to date exceeds 3,000 hours!

I got the freebies, plus my 3 free credit books (free trial credit, bonus credit for signing up with code, free credit for reviewing app) and got out. Their website sucks, search doesn't always work, can't download anything, selection is pretty poor (took me forever to find books I was looking for that they carried) and the app isn't great. Oh and while it's not horrible the quality of their MP3's could be better. Add to that the info CS gave me that if they removed a book from sale on the website it is also removed from user accounts (which if truly accurate is the only service like this that does that AFAIK) and I canceled as soon as I could.

If you couldn't tell I wasn't impressed.

It sounds, from the last couple of posts, that there was a lot of frustration involved in dealing with them. More frustration is something that I don't need any more of right now, either.

I know that Amazon has its detractors (occasionally I am one), but they've "got their act" together, if you ask me. Almost everything works smoothly and it's easy to contact someone in customer service (as far as I've been able to determine, there is not even a customer service telephone number given at Walmart.com), among other things. Same thing, only maybe more of it, with Audible. Of course, Amazon's been around a while (20 years) and have had time to work through issues. However, I've been ordering from them for over 15 years and they seemed to have their act together way back then. So, I'm real thankful for them.

BTW--I think that Jeff Bezos is a business genius.
