I have a K3 & use those M-Edge lights with it had 2 where the bulbs blew after a few months use. Lucky I can stock up at $3 each. Unlucky they been discontinued so I know they old to begin with! & I soon wont be able to get them
To (finally) answer your questions, the PW3 (and current PW2) have 4 GB in storage, of which about 3.2 GB are available. The Kindle is pretty wasteful as far as storage goes but that still should give you 2-3 thousand books.

As far as the Kindle's illumination goes, it uses a completely different approach than an external light. You shouldn't have a problem with it and on-device lighting is a MUCH better solution. if you are committed to Kindle, a PW3 is the way to go.

In the years that I have been on Mobileread I have never once seen a post about a LED from any company failing. There may have been a few where a circuit in the lighting system fails and the whole lighting system stop working, but never an individual LED going that I can remember. These are manufactured devices, so there's always the possibility of a manufacturing issue, but worrying about a LED going is not something you should be doing.

I've been using devices of all sorts with LEDs since there have been devices with LEDs. I think that's about 25 or 30 years. In that time I've probably owned 15 or 20 computer monitors with LED backlights. I'm a retired computer programmer who worked for large corporations and I probably have worked with another 40 or 50 monitors personally.

When a monitor goes out it's usually the LED that goes. I think I remember that happening 2 or 3 times. All the rest of the monitors were upgraded, not replaced because they were defective.

In addition I've been using devices with LED indicators for decades. All kinds of devices have LED indicators. I can't recall one ever going out although I can't be sure I haven't forgotten one.

In my apartment I typically had to replace an incandescent light bulb every 2 or 3 weeks. Then I began using the CFL bulbs and that extended it to every year or so. About 2 or 3 years ago I began using LED bulbs. None have gone out yet.

I've been using lighted ereaders since there have been lighted ereaders. I live in a retirement home and I've also helped a lot of my neighbors get started with them and use them. No LED has ever gone out in the probably 25 or 30 ereaders I've dealt with. A couple of my neighbors have died but their LEDs were still working just fine.

Being retired I have a lot of time so I've been reading ereader blogs and forums since there have been such things. I read Amazon's Kindle forum daily. Your post is the first I can recall that even mentions the possibility of an LED dying in an ereader. I've never seen anyone say it happened.

If you get a lighted e-ink reader of any kind the chances are very good the LEDs will still be working on judgement day. Don't worry about it.
