The "added to CC" date will not change, although everything else about the book might.

So, to end this flight of speculation, when does calibre download the news? Is the date in the news file name always one day old? Does the newest edition always overwrite the previous edition?
I've been thinking about this...
Two CNET downloads didn't occur on the same day (they're scheduled as you can see in my other post.) So, I have no idea how or why the file name gets messed up...
But...I don't think this is a big problem, either. I set a few news items to last longer than 0 just to give myself a chance to read them the next day prior to the new edition being downloaded and sync'd. I've reset all the daily items to 0 days now. If I want to read one I missed the next day, I can do so in Calibre until the new one is downloaded. Plus my typical default behavior is to delete a daily news source once I have read it (so it can't get duplicated in that case.)
So, barring a change in Calibre, or an interesting idea from you or other users that you choose to pursue, I am very satisfied. Thanks again.

There is another I think not-very-likely possibility. By default the wireless device driver will use an existing file if the UUID of the book matches one that has been sent before. If calibre is reusing books (I didn't think it did this but ...) then CC will override the file name.

You can test if this is the case by going to calibre / preferences / device interfaces / smart device, clicking the Configure button, then unchecking the box "Replace books with same calibre ID". If that makes the new books appear instead of replacing existing books then we know something.

I think we already know a lot!
I will try it, but tomorrow I think, as Calibre is already in download mode as I type this..

Edit: I cannot get to calibre / preferences / device interfaces / smart device. If I click preferences from the main screen my options do not include device interfaces or anything that I can find that gets me to smart device... I'm on version 2.3 (64-bit)

Preferences / Plugins / Device interface plugins / SmartDevice App Interface. If you don't see Plugins scroll down to the bottom of preferences and you will see it.

This seems to have worked. CNET just downloaded and I sync'd it to CC. Two instances of CNET now coexist on the tablet. But here's an interesting (but very minor) glitch. The date added to CC is correct (one for today, one for yesterday) but the date added to Calibre for both is today (so something modified yesterdays metadata on that specific file.) I doubt it makes any difference but as previously noted, the date formats are different. In both cases the date added to Calibre is "15 Jun 2015" The date added to CC is "2015-06-15"

That means that calibre is reusing books. I need to look at why that is.

CC has a setting, Settings, Customise the book list, Format of CC dates in the book list" that affects how CC dates are shown. Is this setting checked or unchecked? Does anything change if you change that setting?

1) Unchecked. 2) I checked it and resync'd CNET...
Nothing changed.

Thanks again. It's working great!
Regarding your comment above though (That means that calibre is reusing books. I need to look at why that is.) what should I look out for, if anything, and/or what can I do to help you on this, if I can?

The best thing to do would be to remind me in 2 or 3 weeks. At the moment I am totally caught up in the "Cloud" interface for CC, and it is hard to keep other stuff in mind.

that is why a glass of wine at the end of the day is so important...
But really, I will if you like, but so far it is fine as is (at least for me.)

I really do mean it.

It is that glass of wine (of which I have had more than one) and my incipient Alzheimers that prevents me from remembering by myself. Sigh ...

To: Chaley. Since doing this with DoctorOhh's help, CC has stopped automatically connecting to Calibre at the set (or any) time. I am going to reverse this and see what happens (but it will take 24 hours to find out) unless you know something already?

That change can have no effect on CC's connecting. CC doesn't care. It could, however, have an effect on where any downloaded news files go. This is of course assuming that CC's setting "Wireless device connection / Allow automatic connection" setting is still checked.

If in CC you go to Settings / Wireless device connection / View automatic connection log then you will see what CC has tried to do and what news it has downloaded. That might help us work out what is happening.

Thanks. The log shows it downloading news sources ("receiving book CNET News") on 24 June and also correctly deleting news sources set to be deleted.
On 25 June, it tries to connect and says "no servers found" It does, though, correctly delete new sources set to be deleted. On 26 June, it does it again. No servers found, etc.
I'm not sure why this is happening. Calibre is set to automatically start by windows, and is running at the time CC is set to automatically connect. When I saw that it was failing to automatically download, I did it manually from CC: Connect...Wireless Device/sync books
And that worked fine. And I did not restart CC or Calibre...
I think I may have my old problem where CC can't find Calibre again...

Edit: Yes. And just restarting Calibre on the PC cures it, as before.
