Having owned both (and a Voyage, too), I'd say personally that the lighting systems on both are damned good.

There have been no complaints about two toned lighting on the H2O, unlike the Kindles.

Sure there have been - ask Josie. She returned two H2Os and bought a Voyage, because of uneven lighting on the H2O (on one of them, at least - I think the other one may have had a faulty USB port).

OK I understand it is the light diffuser that Amazon improved, but if its nothing to do with the capacitive touch screen, can you explain why Kobo can get the light working so well on their other readers but haven't been able to do so on the only one with the capacitive touch screen?

What Ripplinger posted "not either layer on its own but how the 2 are combined in the manufacturing process" being the issue still makes sense to me?

I can't say for sure, obviously, but I could put forward a number of suggestions. Perhaps, for example, this device, with its flush screen, had a wider gap between the light diffuser and the actual display screen below it. That could certainly result in a less sharp image. That was the mistake that Sony made with their short-lived and horrible PRS-700.

I got a decent H20 on my third attempt, and Harry was right, my second had perfect lighting but it wasn't recognised by my pc so it had to go back. I have a Voyage too and I was lucky there I hit a good one on my first attempt.

The H2O is NOT 6". It is 6.8". Yes, it is heavier, but the difference is negligible. The H2O has a lot more to process and with a good font, you get a better reading experience because you get things like kerning, user adjustable margins, line-height, user installable fonts, hyphenation, and more.

The screen of the H2O is very even with the light off and the light is very even when on. There is a very thin shadow at the bottom of the screen and that just goes across the footer. None of the text of the book is bothered y the shadow. The rest of the screen is very well light and very even. Besides, the light is so good that if you turned it up to that high a brightness, it would be too bright. In the dark, I am able to easily read at 4% brightness. So if 4% is good, 50% would be overkill. But there is no real uneaveness to the light and the screen.

I say go for the Kobo Glo HD or wait for the upcoming Kindle. No point getting the Aura with older screen tech.
I agree not to go for the Aura, But I don't agree to wait for the PW3. The H2O has a very nice screen and light and it's larger. It feel more like you are reading a book than a screen.

The mistake Sony made with the 700 was the awful touch layer. The touch layer of the 700 was like looking in a mirror and it made the screen look somewhat fuzzy. The light in between the touch layer and the screen did not help at all.

Even if you took the light out and moved the screen closer to the touch layer (aka the 600), it was still awful because of the very poor touch layer.

Unless you want a 6" screen. Lots of people do, even if we don't. In that case, it's Glo HD vs. PW3.

It's not an explanation - it's a pure guess . I have no more inside knowledge than anyone else does about why the Aura HD doesn't have as sharp an image as the rest of the range.

I should just have phrased it "possible explanation"

I'd say its more an educated guess. It helps me understand more about what might be behind it. I had just figured it must be down to the capacitive layer, and maybe it is, or the light diffuser or maybe the flush screen used on capacitive devices means there needs to be a wider gap between the diffuser and display.....

It'll be interesting to see if Kobo ever come up with an updated 6" Aura or if the Glo HD means they have given up with a capacitive touch, flush screen ereader.

It's Kobo Aura 6" being not as sharp and not Kobo Aura HD 6.8" you meant I guess.

i actually like the flush screen of the aura, but the sharpness screen of glo hd makes it seems a better option

i hope to exchange it tomorrow, unfortuantely i can't exchange to the pw3

but im happy with pocket intergration as i like that a lot
