I too am having an issue downloading google books with ADE 2.0. I do not want to upgrade to 4, but if I must I can load it on a laptop or another profile (and most likely get books elsewhere in future). Seems a shame I was just starting to not mind getting books from google.

What is actually happening when you try to download the Book? Are there any error messages?

That is the same error message I am getting. Have re-authorized ADE 2 but has made no difference. Works fine with library, both Overdrive & 3M. Started about a week ago also.

I think I've gotten this error in the past and it was an Adobe problem I just had to wait for it to go away. I hope that's all this is and they're not turning off the servers that use old drm.

I don't know what Google is up to and not sure if this sheds any light on the situation, but here are some tidbits I gleaned from chatting with an Adobe insider a while back:

Adobe Content Server (ACS) is what a bookseller/library uses to deliver ebooks to you:

If a bookseller/library is using ACS 4.0, it will deliver old DRM
If a bookseller/library is using ACS 4.2+, it can deliver either old DRM or new DRM, depending on what settings the bookseller/library chooses
It's not clear what happens with ACS 4.1

Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) -- or RMSDK if you're downloading directly to an ereader -- is what you use to download/receive ebooks from a bookseller/library:

ADE 1.7.2 or 2, or RMSDK 9 can only open old DRM
ADE 3 or 4, or RMSDK 10 can open both old and new DRM

To determine which ACS is being used, try opening the acsm file in a text editor, look for the fulfillment link between the <operatorURL> tags then add /statuscheck/ and copy it into a browser. In most cases, it will give you info on the ACS fulfillment server, including what version ACS is being used (though the statuscheck fails with Google).

Examples:

Overdrive through my local library: http://acsepub.contentreserve.com/fu...t/statuscheck/ -- reporting ACS 4.1.2

Kobo: http://acs4.shortcovers.com:8080/ful...t/statuscheck/ -- reporting ACS 4.0.3

The version I have is ADE 2.0.67532. Strange it is working for some people & not others. It is not a matter of opening the books. They won't even download. So far I have only tried with free books so maybe the issue is confined to a specific server. I'm afraid to order a book that costs $ now that I know there is an issue.

One of the books that would not download was Welcome to Paradise by Rosalind James.
Today I tried saving the .ascm file instead of trying to download it. I can open the file in ADE but it vanishes when I switch to the library view as it is not really downloaded/saved. I tried downloading another file & noticed it was an actual .epub. I just save that one & it had no DRM. So be sure & pay attention to the file type when you try & download.

This just downloaded fine for me using ADE 2.01.78765. When downloading, I chose open. The plugins also stripped drm.

There is only around 100kb difference in size between 2.01 & ADE 2.0.67532. I could not find any info on what changes were made between the 2 versions but it had to be minor. 2.01 only came out a few months after the version I have now. Weird that it was working fine until about a week ago.

Do you know if I have uninstall the version I have now to install the newer version? I have quite a few books in the ADE library right now & would hate to upset any connections.

Downloaded fine and into Calibre fine with the plugins.

I have re-downloaded Version 1.7.2 as well as it seems to run faster and better, and I prefer the appearance, although obviously I can't use it for the Google Play books any longer

I am not going to download Version 4 until the plugins will work with it.

If Version 4 becomes mandatory with ePub bookstores without working plugins then I won't be purchasing from those stores again.

That old saying about locks only keeping honest people out is so true. This isn't going to stop any pirates, it only serves to obstruct and infuriate the honest customers.
