ADE and Google Play problem

I am having problems with ADE and Google Play books.

Previously, I had no problem downloading DRM'ed books from Google Play into ADE. As of last night I am getting ADE Error 2038:

"IO Error on Network Request.
Please check your network connection and try again."

I thought it was just the one book and have requested a refund from Google Play. However, I just tried again, 24 hours later, to download a free but DRM'ed book just to test the waters and I am getting the same error

I can download books (thank the heavens) from Kobo with no problem so it is not purely an ADE problem.

Has anyone else had this difficulty or does anyone have any possible solutions I could try? (They would have to be simple as unfortunately I am not all that technical.)

I have a few Google Play giftcards to use and the only thing I buy from them is books

I'm in the UK and have just tried it with a DRM-free book via ADE and it was fine, but I get the same error as you with a DRM'd book.

I tried deleting the files in the restore folder in MyDE and turning off my adblocker but it made no difference, as per the instructions here:

I had tried deleting those files too and no luck

. I don't use an adblocker. I tried temporarily disabling my Norton firewall but that didn't help either.

Don't you just looove DRM...

I had the same problem yesterday, trying to get "Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell" from Google Play. I ended up requesting a refund and buying it from Amazon.

As you say, ADE works ok with Kobo and I have no problems with my overdrive library books either, so it must be something related to Google Play.

Maybe they've started giving out the new Adobe DRM, that would be terrible. What is you ADE version?

It would also be really, really stupid of Google, given that no reader yet has a version of the RMSDK which supports it. I very much doubt that's the cause of the problem.

Kobo ereaders have been using RMSDK 10, which supports the new DRM, since July 2014 (firmware version 3.5.0).

Thanks for the correction, Geoff, I wasn't aware of that. The fact remains, though, that the vast majority of eInk ePub devices don't support it.

I think I've got half an answer. I've never been able to get Calibre to directly un-DRM books. What I do is to download a text from Google books using the 'ordinary' software, in my case a Sony Reader for PC. I then transfer the text into my ebook (a Sony Reader), and then transfer it from the ebook into Calibre. I guess that this final version is DRM-free, but no doubt some of you will then tell me if I'm wrong.

Try to open the book inside Calibre. If you can read it, it's DRM-free. If it has DRM, Calibre will tell you.

I'm using ADE 1.7.2 so its an older version to avoid any possible problems with new DRM. Strange how its working for some people and not others?

I just tried again and still get the same error so I've sent them an email.
