It's also in the system tray of my Windows 7 PC, but is there any benefit in "reserving" the upgrade in advance? Just curious.

The sole benefit is that it's then done, and you'll get Windows 10 automatically when it's released.

Have you read over the limitations that you will have with windows 10 with the free upgrade. The biggest for me is losing the media player.

The only requirement is a legal license pointing at the machine.

Media Player doesn't seem to be going.
Media *center* has been gone since Win8.

Isn't Media Center a $9.99 online feature update to Win 8/8.1? Or is that something else?

Uh-huh.
Used to be bundled with (versions of) Win7 and earlier.
Was removed from Win8.
Restored as extra cost option.

No longer available at all after Win10.

I'm not seeing any reservation option.

I've seen that "business users" are not getting this option, but I don't know how Windows determines if you're a business user or not. My computer is running Windows 7 Ultimate English x64 on a normal home computer and home network.

I wonder how many millions of people are going to actually overlook this icon

And I wonder how many millions expect a 'normal' (SP-like) update and then get scared into oblivion when their entire OS changes in a few months

Also, there will probably be a lot of people who will mistrust this icon/dialog, thinking it is spam, adware, or some sort of malware, trying to trick them into something bad...

Both of my Professional edition home machines (7 and 8) got the icon, but my work laptop, running the same version of 7 Pro, did not.

Surely even with the reservation, the OS will not install itself without the user's explicit say so!?!?

So, what is the definition of a 'work computer'; one that is in a domain? Has a volume license key? It almost has to be something like that, because this installation over here is not an OEM-edition.

Yes; the reservation popup said you could install immediately, or wait until 'the time was good for you.'

The things I am most interested in are these:
- Do we get a valid serial number, by mail or something?
- Do we get an option to download a fully updated ISO to re-install?

I don't relish having installing Windows 7 (I have a CD that was produced JUST before SP1 release, end of 2010), then update it to SP1, then update it with 500 million updates, then upgrade it to Windows 10, then upgrade that to the latest version, if I ever need to reïnstall.

For some time, Microsoft offered full ISO's for Windows 7 through Digital River, but they stopped doing that in Febuary this year.

According to this ZDNet article, neither Enterprise edition, nor domain-connected machines get the reservation icon app.

Just got my notification earlier today and decided to go for it. Filled in my e-mail address and reserved a copy and got rid of the tray notification by jumping through hoops by deleting the update on my computer and at the windows update center!

One can Google how to do it! Set my update preferences to asking me to install updates instead of automatically installations.

They are supposed to send an e-mail when it happens, so I plan to do total disks images of my current setup and op system so I can recover or roll back in case of trouble or distaste.

Running win 7 pro and do not want lose or have to spend days rebuilding my setup!

It looks like there are benefits to upgrade in the long run but I suggest or recommend anyone that has used "Window's anytime upgrade" and paid to upgrade their op system!

To pull a total disk image or clone their system, and not just a backup before allowing the Windows 10 installation to be carried out, to avoid grief later.

Hurry up Microsoft, I want to play!

Windows 10 has a restore system built in where you can make it go back to an unmodified windows installation. So no need to reinstall unless you want to go back to win7.

I then got the opportunity to ALL Windows upgrade versions for a very low price, because of an IT-study I was doing, provided I already had a legal edition to upgrade from. However, I could only get each version once.
