I can't see MS not offering snapshots for brand-new installation, for precisely that reason. They aren't stupid, and one would have to be VERY stupid not to offer slipstreamed installation at a certain point.

And as for this -- that is why I prefer to use a bleeding edge distro, where everything is updated within a day or two.

But even Ubuntu and other stable distros that use FeatureFreeze will update the browser and any other components that contain security fixes.
As for applications that are merely out of date and missing the latest cool features, many of those would not have been updated on Windows either, because people don't care as long as what they currently have works.
Occasionally a hardware incompatibility (e.g. calibre) pops up, which can admittedly be frustrating.

Again -- most people just aren't as worried about that as they could be. Regardless, core applications DO receive updates.

I will update at least 2 machines to Windows 10, maybe 3.

Maybe 2 more if one of my sons is still close by.

The Application programs MUST run! ("The Spice MUST flow!")

And all this just reminds me how wonderful my Chromebook (that I inherited from my wife) is.

It is now official: July 29th begins the delivery of Windows 10 to legit Windows 7 and 8.1 devices. An estimated hundred million devices in 190 markets.

What's the consensus from the preview users? Should we 7/8 users jump right on 10, or only change if we have a compelling reason?

My current PC runs Windows 7, and will be out of support in 2020. It is said that Windows 10 will become a rolling release, receiving updates 'forever', as long as the device it is installed on lives.

Therefore, a Windows 10 upgrade will provide me with almost unlimited support for this 7 year old computer. It will become a very nice legacy gaming system (basically running everything up to The Witcher 2, and Pillars of Eternity from 2015.) My new computer, to be built as soon as there is a successor to the nVidia GTX 960/970 (GTX 960 Ti?), will start with Windows 10 from the outset.

I just hope the built-in Web Search and Cortana can be disabled, because they are useless to me. The web search just delays displaying the results if the internet connection speed is a bit slow.

What gets delivered in July will be the last stable core of Win10.
Other features that aren't ready for prime time will ship when they are done.
It *should* be perfectly safe to be the first kid on the block to update but it would be safest to wait until august or September.

(All updates run into glitches with uncommon hardware. It is safer to let other people gamma test those drivers.)

I got the same thing early this morning. I submitted my email to reserve my copy (I did not get any confirmation email though like I thought it said), and so far there doesn't seem to be a way to get rid of that icon in the system tray. I sure hope it's not going to be permanently there until Windows 10 is released, but I suspect that will be what happens.

I'm going to clone my current full drive to another for safe-keeping, then install Windows 10. If I hate it, I can just swap my old drive back then.

It says you've got up to one year to accept the offer, so it seems logical to wait for all the holes to be fixed before you do anything.

Huh...I just dragged my eyes slightly down and to the right, and sure enough, I have that on my new Win 8.1 machine too!
I see it on my wife's Win 7 system, but not on my work Win 7 system.

No.
But if you don't upgrade before the year is up you *will* have to pay to upgrade.
