Although I guess you can't know what any news source is. Mine only have a News tag and no other tag except the delete tag. Anyway, however you do it, allow for different delete tags.

Now that I have a separate option I can now use a bigger hammer to fix the preferences screens. I made the necessary changes. My T62 now shows the dialogs you mention, albeit with different "colors" than the rest of CC. Here are three screen captures from my T62+ with the setting checked:

So how do you like the T62+? I'm jealous - I don't see anywhere to buy one since Banggood is out of stock. I don't think there's much that will help the Onyx device.
I bought if from a Spanish company, Energy Sistems.

TBH: both my wife and I prefer the Onyx device. It is lighter and smaller (narrower), feeling better in our hands. Its wifi works reliably, something not true for our T62+. The T62+ carta screen is better but not that much better. Battery life is roughly equivalent (I have setcpu installed on both). We don't care about the extra 4GB of memory. The T62+ is a bit faster, but not enough to really matter. For various reasons my wife is currently using the T62+. We will see if that lasts.

Calibre defines a news book as one that has a News tag (as translated) and is authored by "calibre". CC is doing the same.

The steps of the deletion process are (after my changes):
  1. Search the database for all books with the News tag
  2. For each book:
    1. Check the book to see if it is authored by exactly "calibre". Ignore it if not.
    2. Check the book for a tag cc_delete_after_N. If the tag exists and N days have passed, delete the book.
    3. Check if the book is older than the CC setting. If so, delete the book.

Energy Sistems wants to charge me VAT and I'm in the US, so that's out. My old Onyx had terrible wifi and my T62 is great with my wifi.

I'm on 3.6.7c. Have been through two cycles, with the delete window set to 1 and now it is set to 0. When set to 1, it works perfectly as intended, although I had already (prior to install) deleted my old news. I just tried 0 days, and it also appears to work just as intended. But.. some comments-
My news sources include daily items (New York Times, Boston Globe) and some monthly sources (PC Magazine, Smithsonian Magazine, etc.) So, there is not a single setting for the delete window that works for both.
I think that we need to rethink the objective a bit. Either we need to be able to set multiple windows such as daily for some sources, and monthly/weekly, etc. for others, or we need a different approach. For instance, if Calibre downloads Time Magazine once per week, Companion could detect that a new version (by date) is available, and sync that to the device and remove the older version as well. For me, I would only want one version at a time, but others may want the two most recent, etc. Thus from my perspective, comments are invited- and I hope that is OK with Chaley.

The problem: the user must set this number to the lowest value desired and existing in the cc_delete_after_ tag. This means that news without a tag will be deleted using that low value. It would probably be safer if this number be the default and permit the cc_delete_after_ tag to specify a lower number. That way the user can specify a higher number which will apply to new feeds and feeds without the tag.

Comments?
How and/or where do I modify the cc_delete_after_ tag? Is it in the recipe, or...?

This is the reason that support for the cc_delete_after_N tag was added. I don't see any reasonable way to handle this in CC, and adding the tag in calibre is straightforward. With the changes I made in version C the value in CC is used only if there is no tag.

It is in the news source configuration. See the end of the prototype FAQ in post 2.

Thanks. Have modified the tag based on news type. I should see some results (the daily items) today and/or tomorrow, but the weekly & monthly items will need a few days or more. If this works the way you described (and I've understood you correctly) then I suspect this is going to be just fine!

V3.6.7d has been released

V3.6.7d:
  • Pop up a configuration dialog when home screen widgets are created, permitting setting the number of books displayed.
  • Option for the home screen stack widget to wrap from back to front and vice versa.
  • Many more e-ink color corrections. Note that I migrated one correction to all devices: white on black preference category labels. My rationale is that they are much easier to see and thus it is much easier to see the settings category groups. This can be easily undone if there is enough outcry.
  • Update languages: Brazilian Portuguese

I noticed a new feature (prior to 3.6.7d but not sure which earlier release) that changed wireless device connection to two options: sync books, or don't sync books.
Is this a debug option for the beta releases, or...?

No, it isn't a debug option. The one line "Connect as wireless device" becomes two lines (the ones you noted) if you check the option "Sync Newer Book Files". Reason: the sync check can take around 1/50th second per book. For multi-thousand book libraries that adds up to a "long time". People wanted a way to choose whether or not to spend that time based on their knowledge of what they had been doing, without having to set and clear the option.

I love the white on black preference category labels! If you did it only for eink, I would have asked if you could do it for all devices. I have scrolled up and down plenty of times on my Nexus looking for things. This really helps.

I seem to have lost the sort and cover grid icons on my T62.
