Yes, they will, after you import them. I'm not sure if with the new cloud collections, you still have to import collections after you download your books.

My new Kindle Paper White has finally shipped, tracking says that I will get it and the cover both on Wednesday of next week. I am cheap so I chose free shipping.
I have also been rearranging my calibre libraries now that I have a real kindle coming. The kindle app on my nexus is ok but I had been using moonreader pro instead. But now it is nice weather I prefer to read on the back deck and the glare is very bad, also getting ready to take a vacation to the east coast, and we will be driving, and I know I will have some time in the car to read. I do not plan on driving the whole way.

I'm a newbie having just purchased a second-hand PW1. Firmware is 5.4.4.2 and the person from whom I purchased the device has apparently had it in Airplane mode since he got it.

I have set up Cailbre on my Mac, and already side-loaded some books onto the PW from Calibre. So far so good. However, the device has not yet registered and as such is missing some key functionality. So, I have several questions (please forgive all ignorance displayed).

1. From my initial reading, I'm unclear if Amazon latest firmware no longer permits side-loading of books, or is it just Amazon prohibits the use of third party software like Calibre to side-load books? I want to use alternate sources to Amazon for e-books.

2. It seems I must register the device to take advantage of several desired features. However, I was led to believe that if I enable wifi on the device, the firmware may automatically update. Is that correct? Obviously, I would like to avoid that as i think I will like/need to jailbreak the device to continue using Cailbre.

3. Finally, upon registering, I assume I can download Kindle desktop software in a directory in which I can extract the appropriate files to jailbreak?

OK. The latest versions of the Kindle firmware, fw6.6.x, has blocked the methods we used to obtain root access. However, the jailbreak, if previously installed, will be preserved when upgrading to fw5.6.x.

Third-party sideloading has not been affected by the new firmware at all. However, our aftermarket addons include tools for managing collections via calibre (see the calibre plugin "Kindle Collections") -- like all aftermarket addons, this requires being jailbroken.

Once jailbroken, there is no real harm in upgrading. The only old firmware that is worth holding onto for dear life is fw<=5.4.0, since it doesn't have Cloud Collections. Also, since it doesn't support Cloud Collections, it supports nested collections via Collections Manager Kindlet.

I copied zip files onto USB device USB folder, unpacked them, ejected & unplugged the PW, and then went to *[HOME] -> [MENU] > Settings -> but did not see the option to "Update Your Kindle". I'm wondering if this is because device is unregistered which would of course would require that i turn on WiFi etc.?

Please reread the jailbreak instructions (the blatant red spoiler marked "INSTALL"), then unzip the ZIP and the ZIP inside and copy over the correct files.

Thank you for this thread - I picked up a used PW1 last week, and was looking at how to upgrade it to the latest FW - it was also at 5.4.4.2 - which is the latest FW for the PW1 - but good to get it jailbroken now just in case they do update it.

... and apparently I cannot read , because you (both) have a PW1. fw5.6.x was only released for the PW2 and on.

Sorry for the panic attack too many of our visitors had PW2s and suffered this exact problem.
