Yes, tell your husband to look into running `calibre-server` multiple times on different ports.

Note -- that also works for serving the same library twice with, say, restrictions applied. In case you need to set it up for other people.

Is there a guide for beginners to set up that? He doesn't know Calibre and I don't know much about servers

Or just have him read the CLI manual page, it is fairly intuitive (assuming one is in the habit of comprehending technical jargon

). All he needs to do is run the calibre-server command and fill in the blanks on a couple of command flags.

Yes, either virtual libraries or separate libraries. Each would have a different "port", and possibly a different password.

The "port" is a number associated with a content server instance, which is a (virtual) library. You can have as many content server instances on a given computer as you wish (as said by eschwartz). Each instance can serve a physical library, perhaps restricted by a virtual library.

As for using a NAS: usually the content server can access libraries on a NAS because it is read-only, but that isn't guaranteed.

What else would you suggest (that isn't that expensive)? Because I don't fancy spending money every month for some space in the cloud.

It seems that you already have looked at the solutions:

An always-up content server on your local network, where you pay for the machine and electricity to run it, where it will go down if power fails at your home, and where you are responsible for maintaining the hardware.
An always-up content server in the "cloud" somewhere where you pay someone else to keep it running and to maintain it.
Keep your entire library on your reader device, updating it from calibre on demand. I will mention that CC works for this, given your questions on the CC forum.
Keep your library on a windows/linux laptop/tablet. synchronized somehow with the "master" copy.
Keep your library on a cloud service like dropbox, accessing it in whatever way it supports (Calibre Cloud, calibre OPDS, etc)

Up to you.

The NAS is not read-only. The calibre server instance is read-only. Read/write calibre libraries on a NAS are not supported (http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/faq....rked-drive-nas).

And sorry, but this sort of question can go on forever. I can't be your personal computer support technician. There are a zillion web pages explaining how to set up various kinds of servers, how to configure home routers, how to set up DNS naming, and how to arrange for synchronization. It is really now up to you to work out what you want to do and how to do it.

As chaley and I said above, you can have as many servers as you like, VL or otherwise.

Via the GUI server instance, you can only have one, even factoring in the (meaninglessness of) VLs.

I was taking the question a Literal.

1 Calibre content server, singular,
not how many servers can you run on a single system (or on your network)

1 server (and port) per PHYSICAL Library (metadata.db)

Ah, I see. I was taking it according to what I thought it meant, i.e. "server" = "this special computer that runs a website" which fit better and didn't involve calibre naming trivia.
