This might be a very stupid question, but here goes:

Do my computer need to be running for the Content server to work, when I'm not at home?

Your computer does not have to be on, as long as you have a personal webserver you can run instead. There are a number of cheap offerings, and you can sync your library to the server then install calibre and run the Content Server via the CLI.

Other options include using free Cloud Storage and calibre2opds -- bit of a hack.

Yes, the Content Server works with CC (regardless of what computer runs it) although there aren't as many features as connecting to the GUI of course.

CC does not support opds catalogs as far as I know, only actual calibre servers.

@Tanjamuse, Calibre Cloud requires that you have your library (probably a copy of) on a cloud service like Dropbox, OneDrive, etc. And no, it won't interop with Companion
