I agree with you. Reading is my passion, so I want the top e-ink reader. I sacrifice in many, many other areas of my life for my kids.

So if you really care, it has been done, c.f. the SkipStone hack. I'm crazy, so I actually use my Kindle for browsing and typing this sentence. ![]() Quote:

I thought about trying to get my dropbox via that browser , & hence access my calibre books copies, but I suspect that just leads to more documents vs books grief, so I think I'll stick to USB sideloads & leave the wifi off, for the long battery life. |

The only time the Paperwhite's screen looks better is when they're side by side and even then the difference is small. While reading both seem perfect. In reality I don't think the Voyage's screen is an improvement but it's still excellent. More and more I'm realizing how much I like a device to be small and light when I have to hold it for extended periods. And there's another reason I bought a Voyage: I'm fond of ereaders and I was curious. It's not that I can afford it. I had to save quite a while to get it. But I can manage it and I wanted to take a look. Now I've looked and I like it. I'm still within my 30 day return period but I'm keeping it. Barry |

I've been using tablets since there were tablets and I finally broke the screen on one (a Nook HD) about 6 months ago by dropping it on a concrete sidewalk. I used to worry a lot about scratching them but even in the days of plastic screens I've never scratched one. I used a screen saver on my original Palm Pilot but not on any of the models that came after and nary a scratch. I'm pretty careful. Somehow, though, ereaders seem more precarious to me, probably because they mean more to me. I've kept my ereaders in cases for the most part because I was afraid to scratch one. It wouldn't matter so much with a tablet but that would be too distracting on an ereader. I guess I'm less afraid of that with the glass so I'm using it without a case, gorilla or not. But I wish I hadn't googled that. I felt pretty confident and now you've spoiled it for me. ![]() Barry |

Well, I finally ordered my voyage today. Can't wait to get it. I'm crossing my fingers that the screen is not discolored.

Ok cybmole what I should have said in my post is that each of us needs to make a subjective evaluation of what the improvements are worth to us. There is no wrong answer here, Cymole obviously values the increase in the resolution more than I do, and that's fine. The issue here is it worth $80 or 52 pounds (conversions by XE.com)? For Cymole it obviously is and that's fine. Each of us needs to make that subjective decision and there is no wrong answers.
I too spend a lot of my day reading both at home and on my commute to and from the office. So much so a few years ago my wife told me that I better get an ereader and we were about to get run out of our basement becuase of all the paperbacks doen there and pretty soon we were going to get over run streight out of the house becuase of all the paperbacks. I wear eyglases becuase I can't see things far away, my wife does also, my son is doomed he will probably wear them in the future as both of his parents wear them. I have seen the voyage, a demo of it, and I am not that impressed with the increase in resolution, however a lot of you are and that's fine. Each of us needs to make an subjective judgement. I think that the light sensor is a great idea as sometimes I reflectively put the light on my paperwhite at the max, not becuase I need it there becuase there is an icon for it. I think having the light intensity spot on every time would be a great improvement for me, however I am not willing to pay 52 pounds for it. I am not willing to give anything for the haptic buttons. I am actually quite enamored with the idea of a touch screen and taping the screen for the page turns. I can understand however that some would disagree and preferr the buttons, there is something to be said for actually touching a button and the feedback from that. I am waiting with baited breath to see what improvements Amazon releases with the new models this fall, I hope that the current model voyage becomes the new model paperwhite while the new voyage gets a whole series of upgrades. I will be rather salivating over that light sensor. Last edited by jbcohen; 05-01-2015 at 08:04 AM. |

My voyage came in about two hours ago and I find it to be a very good upgrade. The screen is better and the light is even. My case came in as well. I may have found a solution to some people's problems with the page press being flush with the screen. My case came with a screen protector, so after I had it installed, I put a tiny bubble sticker in the middle of the forward page press line. It actually works fabulous.(no multiple page turns)😀 Now, I will be able to find it in the dark. It may seem stupid, but whatever works....
My pic had a reflection of my cell phone that I could not avoid. |
