linux os started without any commercials nor asking for donations; it's gotten big now & still don't have "commercials" in itself. I use irfanview as my graphics viewer of choice & no commercials & still free.
Total Commander for the tablets is also free & no commercials; I've used it when it became available. TC has a windows version which I just paid for as my windows file manager because the windows version now understands & connects MTP; I can just select & drop files from the tablet onto my computer harddrive as in backup of my ebook directory which I do once a month. I also use foobar2000 as my audio player in windows, free & no commercials & excellent. Of course, within linux, there are lots of apps that are free & without commercials & the developers are from all over the world, including China & Russia. Don't recall any commercials for the DeDRM plugin app. |

Does anyone remember if the Fire HD 6" has ever been offered lower than $79? My mother in law has finally decided she wants one. She's willing to wait for the next sale. I bought my mother one for $79, but can't recall if they've ever gone lower.

$79 has been the lowest. I use camelcamelcamel (Camelizer) browser add on to check things like that. Its like a price watch for amazon items, like ereaderiq is for kindle books. You can also put in a price watch there.

Thanks, that's good to know! So I'll just wait for the next sale, whenever that may be.

Can someone tell me if Kindle Fires have an instant dictionary like Kindle touch? I don't have any hope about vocabulary builder or flash cards but dictionary like Kindle has would be the only reason to buy a Fire for me.

As far as I can tell, my Fire HD 6 and Kindle Touch have the same dictionary and work identically. (Long press the word, get the definition -- both will allow you to go to the "full definition" where you'll get the full page from the dictionary.) I'm in the United States, so the default dictionary is "The New Oxford American Dictionary" (on both devices).

Question...some of us have huge Amazon libraries (as in 5000 plus books in the Cloud account, not side loaded to the cloud). I am wondering if this affects people with the Fire HD 6, causing it to become extremely slow when wifi is turned on. I have the 16 GB.
I just tested my mothers's 8 GB Fire 6, and it is not slow at all, no stuttering, very smooth operation, wifi on or off. Could my books library be the cause? Do others with huge libraries experience extreme lagginess with their Fire HD 6 tablets? |

That's interesting. At one time the iPad Kindle app also had problems with large libraries, but they fixed that about a year ago. The responsiveness of the library screen now doesn't seem to change even with a few thousand books.

The Kindle app is terribly slow to load my kindle library for me on my Galaxy 4 phone, my LG Volt "media player" and my Nexus 7.
I've always thought the sluggishness on my HD6 was related to the size of my library, but that's never been proven to be the reason why it's so slow. I've never contacted Amazon about the problem. |

I've set parental controls and blocked "books" from my device. So far, it does seem to be running faster. I'll report back after additional usage.

I'll have to try that and see if it makes a difference.

In my opinion, my Fire 6 is MUCH faster now that it no longer attempts to sync my massive Kindle books library.
The only problem I have with it now is Scribd. Books don't want to open. But I think I prefer that app on my Nexus 7, anyhow, due to the narrow margins in the app. |
