But if you find out that it drains your watch battery flat in a few hours, it's not likely that it's something you're going to carry on doing.

I see no reason for your claim that Apple are "lying". They say that it lasts 18h, and they tell you the conditions in which that is the case, just as Amazon tell you that the Kindle battery charge will last 2 months, if you read for half an hour a day. I recharge my Kindle about once every three weeks, because I read rather more than Amazon's assumption, but it doesn't invalidate the stated claim.

The point of it is so that you can go jogging without your phone. Or pretty much any other reason one might currently have to own an iPod in addition to their iPhone.

I didn't say lying. I said exaggerating. I do think it's wrong to say 18 hours when it's clearly not even close.

Er, no, you said they were lying:

Well, technically it is a lie. It doesn't last 18 hours. Can you show us how the numbers of real usage add up to 18 hours or even close?

I don't have the remotest idea how the typical user will use this device in the real world and nor, I suspect, do you. Companies like Apple, though, spend enormous amounts of time and money doing usability research, and I strongly suspect that they do have a pretty good idea. But you say they are "lying" based on... what?

Presumably Apple think it's something people would do. Why else would they have included the facility to do so?

Based on 18 hours when you see usage time is not 18 hours (not even close).

But people don't "use" a watch for 18h a day. It's on their wrist, and they look at it from time to time.

But this is not just for keeping time. It's for doing lots of other things such as running apps, listening to music, reminders, calenders, messages, phone calls, health tracking, etc. So yes, I can easily see the battery running down sooner then a lot would like. Once it gets to a certain point, it becomes a watch for seeing the time until it's charged (or the battery really does run out).

And the battery will always run out of stored energy at the most inconvenient time...

Frankly, until it people start using it in the real world, we won't know. I will say this. The Apple Watch isn't a replacement for the iPhone. I suspect that most people will not be listening to 6.5 hours of music on it, but rather will be listening to 6.5 hours of music on their iPhone. It seems to be designed to be used for a series of short transactions rather than continuous use.

See, that's worth the price of the watch right there. No more, "oh I forgot my wallet". Now it's, "oh no the battery died in my Apple Watch, can you pick up this one and I'll buy next time?"

Simple solution for those who want long battery life from the Apple Watch.... Buy multiple of them. One on wrist, one on charger, one charged waiting to go.
