The likelyness you will be able to downgrade your Kindle - without physically opening the device - does not depend on which flavour of the Kindle you choose (with or without special offers).
It only depends on the firmware version you receive the Kindle with. NiLuJe can be more specific, I always forget version numbers, however if your kindle gets shipped with a version prior to 5.6.x (something like that, again don't take my numbers for granted), then you will be able to jailbreak it.
Otherwise you won't.

What is affected by the specific flavour of kindle you choose (with or without SO) is only the possibility for the screensaver hack to show your specific screensaver. To abide to Amazon business model, the screensaver hack purposely won't work on a Kindle with special offers.

You can buy an SO Kindle and find out if it's able to be jailbroken -- you can apply the jailbreak on firmwares < 5.6.x

And if you jailbreak it, THEN go ahead and pay $20 to have the ads removed so you can use the screensavers hack.

My Kindle just auto updated to 5.6.1.0.2, I thought back door lock and the folder were supposed to prevent auto updates. Still seems to be jailbroken. Guess I should keep it on airplane mode?

That's just obvious. Always keep wi-fi turned off unless strictly, extremely, absolutely necessary.

Regarding the update prevention methods, I already had pointed out that the folder method was no longer working in one of my past messages.
Now according to your post it seems the BDL either has been overcome; that's a shame.

Yeah I took it off airplane mode to transfer two books I purchased because I was being lazy to get the cable. Books transferred but I let it sit for a few minutes while I was messing with adding them to my Calibre library as well. Next thing I know, it's updating. Well, at least I didn't lose JB.

No way to cancel an update while it's running I'm assuming? Some devices that deal with firmwares generally have a backup where they can rollback if say it were to crash, although I can't see how you'd hard reset the kindle considering the power button .

After a firmware update, you must always reinstall ALL hacks (anything installed with a *.bin).

I will go out on a limb here and say it has to do with the fw update from a few posts before. Hence my advice in the post immediately preceding yours.

I have a PW2 Wi-Fi 4GB US (9017)

It shipped with 5.4.5.1 and I successfully downgraded it to 5.4.3.2. When I try to apply the jailbreak, I get update error 007.

I unzipped the update on OS X from the command line:

cd /Volumes/Kindle
unzip ~/Downloads/kindle-jailbreak-1.14.N.zip
cd ~
diskutil eject Kindle

.. unplug Kindle ..

.. Update ..

.. Error 007 ..

Any pointers would be really appreciated!
