OK, so I spent the $20 for the 520. But now I see that the case is another $5, and the screen shield is another $5.99.
At some point, this is not going to make economic sense. Do you folks feel that the case and screen are necessary? |

Only if you plan to travel with it. I only bought a TPU case to keep from staining the back but have no protector on the front. The TPU case I bought is designed so you can place the device face down and it will protect it that way.

What Blossom said. If you're good at doing wet installs, Xtremeguard commonly runs sales of 85% or more, maybe one every two months, where you can get a full-body (front and back) protector for about $2. That's what I did.
(Finger sliding is slightly rougher than with a dry-install front screen protector.) EDIT: I believe an 85%-off sale is still going on now, using this code: newyear85 Here's the slickdeal thread on this. Here is the Nokia 520 page. Free shipping. It looks like you could get the dry protector for the front, total cost around $2, or buy double in case you mess up the install. Last edited by jj2me; 01-21-2015 at 08:51 AM. |

My wife has the Lumia 635 without a case or a "screen protector" that she throws in her purse every morning before work and the darn thing doesn't even have a scratch on it. She has had it for a couple of weeks. For a phone that you got for the absolute bargain bin price of $20 (in the world of smartphones they almost paid you to have it, for that price) you could go either way: you don't need the extra protection because the phone was so damn cheap it doesn't matter. Or, the phone was so damn cheap you now have more than enough money for a few extras. |

Thanks, guys!
Here is an article that says that MS will give users of their Windows phone OS a free copy of Windows 10. I don't really understand this, but I'm sure that one of you mavens can explain it. http://www.msn.com/en-us/money/techn...id=ansfinreu11 |

Well I got my new 520 yesterday and it is a good as everyone says. I am very impressed with the GPS app that it comes with which works just fine with download maps and download voice for navigation. Note to load maps on your SD card follow the instructions earlier in this thread but you need to open the thread on the phone and then click on the site and download directly. You can have maps on both the SD card and the phone itself and the downloaded app will let you switch to the set you want.
It took me quite a while to update (more that one update required) and get everything loaded properly but it works fine now. I haven't decided whether I will enable the phone part. It works for 911 calls in any event. Is there any reason to even plug in the sim card if you are not enabling the phone. Currently I have airplane mode on and the I turned WiFi and Bluetooth back on. I don't know if I needed to do that but it seems to cause no harm. Dale |

"I'm still expecting that big sellers like the 520 and 630/635 may be left on 8.1 Update 1 too, or at the very least presented with a cut-down experience on '10', because of the 512MB of RAM."

Color me not surprised if the 520 gets left behind.
I bought the 520 because it cost me $10 and it supports Audible, OverDrive, Kindle, FM radio, TuneIn, Pandora, and iHeartRadio. I really don't care if it ever gets WP 10. If I was in the market for a smartphone, the 520 never would've been considered because of its weak specs and weak app store. My minimum requirements are Android or iOS, quad-core CPU, 2GB RAM, 8GB ROM w/ mSD or 16~32GB ROM wo/ mSD. The only thing I want from Microsoft at this point is Update 1 so I can create folders natively. The folders app I'm currently using sucks at it and is just barely better than not having folders at all. |

For audiobooks and music (streaming, FM, and downloaded), it's a fantastic player. For anything else, I'd get a different device. |
