HDX no search in kindle books

I was reading a book from amazon on Kindle fire HDX, in the built in kindle app last night, and wanted to search fora phrase within the book

I couldn't find any "search" option. Was i not looking hard enough or is there really no such feature?

surely it exists on kindle e-readers ( I don't own one to check with) ?

Just touch the screen and select the magnifying glass icon on the bottom of the screen if in portrait mode or the side of the screen if in landscape mode.

aha - you mean down at the very bottom screen, where there is <- and home symbol. I took that bottom line to be an android OS line and not part of the reading app, but yes that works.

its NOT intuitive though. I would have expected search to be on the top of screen controls line where you do fonts, xray, bookmark, share etc.

because the other 2 controls on that line, left and home, both take you out of the book completely.

but thanks for telling me how to find it.

Home always takes you out, left takes you back one step which may be out or not depending.

The little magnifying glass/search button that you see is context sensitive, meaning that it will utilize search functions within apps that have them. Otherwise, it will search the tablet/your stuff/internet.

A little confusing and something that the main Google branch of Android got rid of a good while ago but Amazon has kept around.

'left' will always take you out of the book, back to where you were when you opened it. It used to work more or less the same as Back on the Kindles (to previously visited locations in the book, etc.), but as of recent updates, no more. You have to tap the little black dots on the scrubber now to go back to recent locations in the book. A little disturbing at first, but now I like it, because there are times I want to go back AND forth between 2 or 3 locations, and it was pretty much impossible to do that before without creating bookmarks.

Note that you can also select a word or phrase of text and Search in Book or Search the Web with that (one of the More options that come up).

So that's a "depends on which Fire you have and the latest update" then ?

Kindle Fire 2 hasn't updated.

That's right. This applies to 3rd and 4th generation Fires.
