You are absolutely correct. But it isn't the money that is the problem. It is the insanity of paying for a book only to add it to my hundreds of other unread books.

What do you suppose it is about ebooks that triggers a hoarding instinct? Paper books never grabbed me in the same way because I live nomadically and hate clutter. While I appear to live a life of simplicity and minimalism, I own enough digital books to win me a spot on Hoarders if they were paper.

The hoarding instinct did not kick in for months after buying my first ereader. In fact, it was MR and Calibre that revealed to me the joys of buying ebooks. Wouldn't give up either.

less guilt and less evidence nothing to dust or move around, no bookcases to buy to hold the books, everything is visually the same size so it's not annoying to sort/resort/reresort stuff.

i'm the same way - despise clutter, don't read that much (just re-started a month ago), yet bought enough ebooks to last me 6 months without even thinking about it. i buy, the tablet stores, but doesn't grow thicker.

maybe it's that lack of physical / visual feedback that makes it seem like a $5 ebook is genuinely nothing at all?

I have an ebook about hoarding and acquisitiveness that I should probably read. Bought it over a year ago. Haven't read it yet. Maybe I should make that a January selection?

I was tempted the last day of the month but resisted. Instead, I forced some order on my literary emagazines. I have 56 issues of Lightspeed and have only read one, which is why magazines are on my goal sheet for this year. I'm also remembering to cull my wishlist.

Right now, I don't think I have anything that is coupon eligible at Kobo, so it's pretty easy to wait to purchase until I'm ready to read. Some of them though are a bit frustrating because they pull them from sale. For instance, I have all the ebooks for Morland Dynasty (Cynthia Harrod Eagles) up to 20, but the books after 20 are spotty - some are available, some are not. Do I wait? Do I get them now because they won't be there? After all, that's what happened to Midsomer Murders - most of the books were pulled from the American market and I was finally able to get my missing ones (sadly at full price) by traveling to Kobo UK.

I'm going to be doing this more often this year. If the library has it I will get it from there, even if I have to wait.

I "bought" #11 of the Albert Campion books by Margery Allingham. But fortunately, it's a Kindle Unlimited book, so I'm still clean.

As I posted in another thread, I've set myself a hard limit of £10/month for ebook purchases this year. I get the feeling I'm going to be in this thread a lot...

Wow, that's a tight limit. Best of luck! Post here before you buy anything if you feel tempted by special offers. A third party's opinion on whether the special offer is worthwhile can be helpful.

Well, I had the first 5 "In Death" books by J.D. Robb(aka Nora Roberts) in my Kobo cart. On sale for $1.99 today and decided to stay strong and remove them from the cart rather than buy. Who knows when I'd read them and I can get them all from the public library(eventually) anyways. YAY me.

Well done. If they aren't "must reads" and they're available from your library, then even a good price isn't good enough.

YAY, you, indeed!

Day four of the new year and after a moment of weakness on the first, it's been easier. If I can resist the initial rush of the want, the urge lessens. I've tightened my wishlist and I'm willing to wait on developments.

At least for now, heh. We all know that while battles are won, the war isn't over.

It's the "who knows when I'd read them?" issue I have to keep prominent when considering a purchase. That's the crux.

Well done! It's hard to turn down offers like that, but it's worth considering that in the two or three years it takes for you to get around to reading to them, they might well get offered at an even better price. (or free!)

I am still at just one (non-subscription) purchase for the year. And I intend to read that sometime in the next couple of months.

Well, my first purchase of 2015 was a doozy, but not a bad deal given the bigger picture. Stephen King's Revival isn't likely to go on sale (compared to the current price) any time soon, I don't expect the price to drop significantly when the paperback comes out, it's not couponable, I was going to buy it at some point anyway, and since it's not part of a series, it's unlikely to be marked down as a loss leader.

With all that in mind, paying $10 instead of the usual ebook list price of $15 was a pretty solid deal for a new big-name release. I'll probably read it back-to-back with Mr. Mercedes before very long, or else I'll put 'em on my October "month-long Halloween" list. I may even throw some Joe Hill into the mix along with them, to make the event a family affair.

I did cut my annual Goodreads goal way back for 2015, though - down to 100 from my more usual 150 or so - to make room for other pursuits. If I wind up going over that, fine, but my main goal is to cut my new purchases down by a similar degree. I'll probably read more than that anyway, because I've been asked to beta-read some short fiction, but that goes under a different name and thus doesn't count toward the 100-book GR goal.

I finished up 2014:

Books bought: 21
Spent: $39.61 out of pocket ($1.89 per book); $61.61 in total since I had $22.00 from the settlement ($2.93 per book)

First 2015 book comes tomorrow!
