Keep what you got the HDX uses Blue LEDs which causes a blue haze on the tablet. It varies how bad it could be. I've gotten one that was noticeable, one with color blobs, and the last try I gave it look like some had taken a blue marker and drew lines. I'd stay away from that tablet if you want something you can read on.

I bet money on Amazon is clearancing them out. Too many returns due to blue light bleed. |

I researched the ASUS 7 ME572 and went to Best Buy for a hands on. It's really nice spec wise and 1920 x 1200 looks great. For $179 I would get it over the Fire HDX, unless you really want to download Prime videos. I was tempted to get the ASUS but decided 7 inches is too small, it's why I returned the HDX (my Sony phone is 6.4"). Discovered the 8" Lenovo Tab S8 next to it (researched it online while there), and went home with that. It was mistakenly still marked down to $159 from $199, I guess from Black Friday. I made them honor the price. If someone's in the market for an 8" tablet look at the Lenovo. Suprisingly great hardware. Last edited by SCION; 12-08-2014 at 12:36 PM. Reason: Typos |

I wouldn't buy a Fire over a decent Android tablet. I love my HD6 but I only really use it for text to speech and audio books. I use my Asus Memo pad 7 more and that's just a basic android tablet.

There are some apps in the Amazon App store that only work on Fires, so that is one reason to have a Fire, if you have or want those apps. In the 7" tablet realm, there is nothing the Fire can do that my Nexus 7 (2013) can't do better. Fire hardware is mostly great, and often a great price, if you can live with the limitations. Nexus 7 hardware is great, without those limitations. |

Asus makes the Nexus 7 as well. So both are great tablets. |

Have to add I hate Windows 8 with a passion! It's one of the worst Windows ever made. Last edited by Blossom; 12-08-2014 at 07:26 PM. |

Hmm. Well, personally, I like Windows 8 and wouldn't really need much for reading, I've heard that the Windows app store has hardly anything for apps, though I wouldn't mind that too much.

I'm not sure you can add custom books to the Kindle app though. I haven't tried that. It may do PDocs (doesn't look like it does yet) but I'm not sure if has more than one font yet or supports publisher's font. I uninstalled it months ago. The Kindle Android app is just as good as the Kindle Fire Reader though.

I went through this a couple of months ago, they had a nifty sale on refurbs. But it had a very noticeable (to me) blue halo and I returned it immediately. Amazon never publicly acknowledged it as the defect it clearly is. Moreover, they continue to ship them rather than scrap them (as I discovered). Of course if all you are doing is watching videos and playing games with it, there is not really any issue. However, the lack of a rear facing camera alone would be a deal breaker for me. It does not have to be a great camera, just one that is good enough to do captures of print, pages of books, etc (as the new HD's have). Last edited by tomsem; 12-09-2014 at 02:21 AM. |
