You don't even get there, therefore it must be something else I think. You are trying to connect through Usb, aren't you? Usbnet active, isn't it? |

Yes!
Usbnet is active, the reader plugged. The network connection is set up. As mentioned I can ping the Kindle in a cmd window. I load the generated private key in the "auth" tab in putty and then I try to open the session to the Kindle in the session tab (choosing SSH and Port 22). The putty console pops up empty and then "connection refused". The putty log shows no more info than that. |

Ok, so. Go to KUAL --> Usbnet, click on USBnet status. What does it says in the bottom lines? Second: Open Kterm (install the extension if you don't already have it). Issue command 'ifconfig -a', then look for a line that reads "usb0". Two lines below you should find "inet addr:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx". Replace x's with numbers. Which numbers are there? |

Calibre is amazing and a "not to be missed" program. It's like an onion. There are so many layers and things you can do with it. It is the one program I will always have, no matter what. Great work by Kovid and company.

Lost.
I've never been unminded by an Automatic update before. I'm now 5.6.1 and my current JB version is 1.11 (I think, unless someone can show me how to check officially). Lots of my programs like collection manager and kindlemenu have stopped working, I don't know if it's due to the individual programs effected by the update or because of the JB version conflicted with the update. Should I update the JB and how? I've just tried the bridge to 1.14 and it failed. What do you guys suggest? |

I'd do more learning than anything. All I know in terms of CS is object oriented Java and C++. Not sure how useful that would be. Then there are time constraints :P

But since when he tries to ssh to it he gets "connection refused" which in the world of IT means "there is nothing listening on the ip/port you're contacting"... and since usbnet is active according to him, now it is time to ask ourselves: are we really sure he's trying to connect to the Kindle? I think: either he's connecting to the wrong address, or he's on the wrong subnet. Let's see. Quote:

If you learn how to that now, when you have 10 books, you can do that little by little when you add a new book to your collection. But if you wait until you have 100.. ![]() Last edited by Ruskie_it; 12-05-2014 at 02:17 PM. |

I completely get that. Just wanted to add in my .02 on how great and useful Calibre is. As a stand-alone library and nothing else it's amazing. When you add in the rest it boggles the mind. Really well-done piece of work.

Time for a magic trick.
![]() Type the following into the search bar and tell me what you get: Code:
;711 Kindle_Touch_Hacking#Useful_hidden_functionality KUAL plugs into the same script, but it is callable via the searchbar even on a stock Kindle with vanilla everything. You can also run your own custom shortcuts by modifying debug_cmds.json ![]() |

"Better" cover? Can you elaborate on that? Newsfeed/favorite websites and make an ebook out of it... kind of like, if I wanted to read say, reddit or something, and import... everything in an ebook style, the con being it would be read only? |

Sometimes when you get your book from unconventional sources, maybe because it's public domain or because it's a document you have created yourself, the cover page might not be so nice. maybe it's a photo of the original cover for example. In that case calibre can be configured to retrieve a new cover looking around in digital bookstores |

Usually articles, but there is nothing stopping someone from writing a reddit news recipe.
![]() ![]() Better covers -- surely you have seen some editions of a book with a really lousy cover? Metadata download lets you search for and download covers from other editions. |
