Kindle Paperwhite Indexing?

I upgraded my Paperwhite to version 5.6.1 and now the search has completely changed. Before, I could search for a nonsense word and it would tell me how many items were still indexing. Or say "no results found" if the indexing was complete.

Now with the search results completely redesigned (for the better), I have no clue if it still shows what's indexing or not. Any other way to check?

Just to the left of the search box is a drop-down list. Choose the 2nd item in the list [All Text] to search for nonsense and see your indexing items.

Are you on 5.6.1? All I see in the new search box (after hitting the magnifying glass on the home screen) is a blank area to search for the word or phrase, and below that is a list of recent searches and a Clear History button. There is no way to choose the type of search beforehand anymore.

But after you actually search for a word, it displays all the results in different categories. I do see one of the categories called "Text in Books" though. It's grayed out and says 0 so maybe that is where it would show if something was still indexing.

Oh well no biggie. It's just nice after I transfer a few books over to verify they actually were indexed, because I've had them get stuck before and drain my battery.

Ummm ... Kindle newbie here. What's indexing and what do I need to know about it?

A giant database full of all the words in every book, which allows you to search for things.

Or rather, indexing is the process of creating that database.

Every time you add a book, the Kindle scans it and adds its content to the database.

Yes, the "Text in Books" option in 5.6.1 is the exact same screen as the "All Items" search gave you in earlier firmware versions.

Yeah. I just checked on that one. Apparently, in a new brilliant move, Amazon has broken what worked perfectly before. Sigh. Sorry. The one device - and the only one I let up date - I have on 5.6.1 I don't use for searching so I didn't realize they had changed it. I hope you get your answer soon.

The new search screen is a great improvement, to my mind, because it allows you to see the results of the same search in different scopes on the same results page. Why do you regard it as being "broken"?

Thanks! I haven't noticed this indexing thing (I don't have many books on my Kindle yet, so that may be why). How long does indexing take and can I still use my Kindle while it's indexing? Should I check to see if it's indexing anything before I put it to sleep so that it can finish?

(I don't think my Sonys ever did this sort of task.)

You can use it normally while it is indexing and the amount of time it takes depends how many books you added. It will index normally while sleeping, though if it is indexing a lot of books (say >100) or gets stuck on a book it may drain your battery.

Yeah I like the new way it searches and sorts results, I'm just not sure it shows if anything is indexing anymore. I had just transferred over like 5 Tom Clancy books, and did a search right away and didn't see a message that it was still indexing them (I'm sure it had to be...unless I totally missed it). Because there is no way it indexed 5 large novels in a minute or two.

So basically my blanket question remains, with the most updated firmware on a Paperwhite, how can I check to see if and what the Kindle is indexing?

You may be better served asking this question on the Kindle Forum or the Kindle Help Forum on Amazon. I think a lot of folks that come here have avoided that particular update. Plus it's a fairly new update.

It can vary from book to book, content, images, etc. might cause the time to vary. The only thing to worry about is if you're losing battery too quickly it is likely a book stuck indexing, unless you're reading a lot or have a lot of books to index.
