The Forgotten Few: The Polish Air Force in the Second World War

Quote:
The crucial role played by Polish airmen during the Second World War and the colourful stories of their adventures have become part of British folklore.

But very few people have any idea of the extent of their involvement, or how they came to be in Britain.

In this brilliant history, Adam Zamoyski explores the unwavering courage of Polish fighters and how they helped to defeat the Nazis.

By the beginning of 1941, there was a fully fledged Polish Air Force operating alongside the RAF.

With 14 squadrons and support services, it was larger than the air forces of the Free French, Dutch, Belgians and all the other European Allies operating from Britain put together.

Some 17,000 men and women passed through its ranks while it was stationed on British soil. They not only played a crucial part in the Battle of Britain, they also contributed significantly to the Allied war effort in the air and took part in virtually every type of RAF operation, including the bombing of Germany, the Battle of the Atlantic and Special Operations.

This book is not intended as a full history of the Polish Air Force. Nor does it pretend to assess the exact contribution of these men and women to the Allied cause. The intention is to give a picture of who they were, where they came from, how they got here and what they did. It also looks at their, at times, strained but ultimately successful collaboration with the RAF and their sometimes difficult, often notorious, but ultimately happy relationship with the British people.

Count Adam Stefan Zamoyski is a historian and a member of the ancient Zamoyski family of Polish nobility. His books include ‘The Last King of Poland’, ‘Holy Madness: Romantics, Patriots and Revolutionaries’, and ‘Paderewski’.

Bargain @ $1.99 for today only (Nov 24th) according to the newsletter from Open Road Media (couponable @ Kobo, should be available in the usual Canada & US stores, may be matched in other regions, etc.):

Babe Ruth: His Life and Legend by former New York Times journalist Kal Wagenheim, a biography of the baseball star.

The most famous baseball player in history, and the most enduring legend, Babe Ruth is remembered for his dramatic heroism not only on the baseball diamond but also in his life. Kal Wagenheim illustrates this larger than life athlete in his book Babe Ruth: His Life and Legends, and describes him as both a product of his childhood in Baltimore and of his formative years as a New York Yankee.

Ruth struggled desperately with the dramatic contrast between the poverty of his youth and the glamour and stardom that his famed career brought him, and although his name became synonymous with wooing women and abusing alcohol, nothing could prevent him from becoming one of history’s greatest athletes.

History of the United States from 1932-1972, Marked Way Down

There were a lot of markdowns out there yesterday (Monday). I felt that this book had to be one of the ones that I posted. Why? In addition to being marked way down, it's massive (1357 pages!) (so, a great value for the price), very highly-rated (5 stars), and written by a highly-regarded historian (William Manchester).

The Glory and the Dream: A Narrative History of America, 1932-1972. By William Manchester. Rated 5 stars from 42 reviews at the present moment. Digital list(?) price $9.99; Kindle price now $3.99. RosettaBooks, publisher. 1357 pages. http://www.amazon.com/The-Glory-Drea...N%3DB00GOENBHA.

Book Description
Award-winning historian and biographer William Manchester, author of The Last Lion, an epic three-volume biography of Winston Churchill, brings us an evocative and powerful exploration of the American way of life from 1932 to 1972. Covering almost every facet of American culture during a very diverse and tumultuous period in history, Manchester's account is both dramatic and surprisingly intimate--with compelling details that could only be known by a dedicated historian who lived through and documented this fascinating time in history.

For several decades, William Manchester was the most popular and highly regarded historian and biographer of his time--and this book provides the reader with a powerful example of the reason for that reputation.

"There is no fiction that can compete with good, gossipy, anecdotal history--the inside story of who said or did what in moments of great tensions or crisis... I think you ought to read this history and weep, read it and laugh, read it and don't repeat it." --Anatole Broyard

Berry Gordy's Autobiography--Just $1.99 Now

I don't care much for autobiographies/memoirs; I prefer biographies over them. Why? Biographies are always, or most always, more objective (believe it or not, some people when writing their autobiography or memoir tell untruths to make themselves look as good as possible. ha). But, this autobiography by Berry Gordy might be an exception--he is bound to relate in the book some priceless stories about some of the great singers that he "discovered" and/or helped to succeed.

To Be Loved. By Berry Gordy. Rated 4 stars from 52 reviews at the present moment. Digital list(?) price $9.99; Kindle price now $1.99. RosettaBooks, publisher.445 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Be-Loved-Berry...ds=To+Be+Loved.

Book Description
If you love the music of Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, or Smokey Robinson, you will love Berry Gordy’s life story. Founder of Motown, Gordy was instrumental in launching the careers of these and many other popular musicians, singers and songwriters.

In this candid autobiography, Gordy gives an authentic personal account of his career—from the inception of his label, founded with $800 borrowed from his family, to the development of an entertainment empire sold to MCA for $61 million. Along the way, Gordy and his artists faced racism and both personal and professional challenges—and overcame them to leave an indelible mark on American popular culture.

To Be Loved is the inspiration for Motown: The Musical, which opened on Broadway in April 2013.

Some ebooks by William L. Shirer are being sold for $2.99 at Amazon

The Rise and Fall of Adolf Hitler

http://www.amazon.com/Rise-Fall-Adol...f+adolf+hitler

American journalist and author William L. Shirer was a correspondent for six years in Nazi Germany—and had a front-row seat for Hitler's rise to power. His most definitive work on the subject, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, is a riveting account defined by first-person experience interviewing Hitler, watching his impassioned speeches, and living in a country transformed by war and dictatorship.

William Shirer was originally commissioned to write The Rise and Fall of Adolf Hitler for a young adult audience. This account loses none of the immediacy of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich—capturing Hitler's rise from obscurity, the horror of Nazi Germany's mass killings, and the paranoia and insanity that marked Hitler's downfall. This book is by no means simplified—and is sure to appeal to adults as well as young people with an interest in World War II history.

The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi German

http://www.amazon.com/Rise-Fall-Thir...qid=1416974136

When the Third Reich fell, it fell swiftly. The Nazis had little time to cover up their memos, their letters, or their diaries. William L. Shirer's definitive book on the Third Reich uses these unique sources. Combined with his personal experience with the Nazis, living through the war as an international correspondent, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich not only earned Shirer a National Book Award but is recognized as one of the most important and authoritative books about the Third Reich and Nazi Germany ever written. The diaries of propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels as well as evidence and other testimony gained at the Nuremberg Trials could not have found more artful hands.

Shirer gives a clear, detailed and well-documented account of how it was that Adolf Hitler almost succeeded in conquering the world. With millions of copies in print, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich has become one of the most authoritative books on one of mankind's darkest hours. Shirer focuses on 1933 to 1945 in clear detail. Here is a worldwide bestseller that also tells the true story of the Holocaust, often in the words of the men who helped plan and conduct it. It is a classic by any measure.

$1.99 Kindle about a Female Spy of WW II. Whispersync Is Only $3.99 and B4G10-able.

A Whispersync is available for this Kindle ebook. It is $3.99, so the total for the bifecta (ebook + audiobook) is only $5.98. The Whispersync is $14.95, so it qualifies for the current Audible B4G10 promo.

The author, William Stevenson, is the spymaster (later called "Intrepid" (subject of the The Man Called Intrepid book) who recruited Vera Maria Rosenberg. She would only let him tell her story, and only after her death. This is just one of what I'm sure are many fascinating facts in, and associated with, this book.

The book does not have the absolute highest rating (4 stars), and I looked at the individual reviews to see why. It appears that it's because the book is so densely packed with information--some rater-reviewers found the book to be difficult for them to read because of that. Read the preview and see if it would present a problem to you, before deciding whether or not to buy.

Spymistress: The True Story of the Greatest Female Secret Agent of World War II. By William Stevenson. Rated 4 stars from 14 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $14.95; digital list price $9.99; Kindle price now $1.99. Arcade Publishing, publisher. 352 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Spymistress-St...f+World+War+II.

Book Description
She was beautiful. She was ruthless. She had a steel trap for a mind and a will of iron. Born Vera Maria Rosenberg in Bucharest, she became Vera Atkins, legendary spy and holder of the Legion of Honor. Recruited by William Stevenson—the spymaster who would later come to be known as “Intrepid”—when she was only twenty-three, Vera spent much of the 1930s running countless perilous espionage missions. When war was declared in 1939, her fierce intelligence, blunt manner, personal courage, and knowledge of several languages quickly propelled her to the leadership echelon of the highly secretive Special Operations Executive (SOE), a covert intelligence agency formed by, and reporting to, Winston Churchill. She recruited and trained several hundred agents, including dozens of women, whose objectives were to penetrate deep behind enemy lines.

The stirring exploits and the exemplary courage of the SOE agents and the French Resistance fighters—who in the words of General Dwight D. Eisenhower together “shortened the war by many months”—are justly celebrated. But the central role of Vera Atkins has until now been cloaked in silence. William Stevenson was the only person she trusted to record her life; he kept his promise that he would not publish her story until after her death. Here is the extraordinary account of the woman whose intelligence, beauty, and unflagging dedication proved key in turning the tide of World War II.

91% Markdown on this Kindle Ebook on World War II

The Second World War: A Complete History. By Martin Gilbert. Rated 4 1/2 stars from 52 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $35.00; digital list(?) price $9.99; Kindle price now $2.99. RosettaBooks, publisher. 856 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Second-World-W...mplete+History.

Book Description
In the hands of master historian Martin Gilbert, the complex and compelling story of the Second World War comes to life. This narrative captures the perspectives of leading politicians and war commanders, journalists, civilians, and ordinary soldiers, offering gripping eyewitness accounts of heroism, defeat, suffering, and triumph.

This is one of the first historical studies of World War II that describes the Holocaust as an integral part of the war. It also covers maneuvers, strategies, and leaders operating in European, Asian, and Pacific theatres. In addition, this book brings in survivor testimonies of occupation, survival behind enemy lines, and the experience of minority groups such as the Roma in Europe, to offer a comprehensive account of the war’s impact on individual lives on both sides. This is a sweeping narrative of one of the most deadly wars in history, which took almost forty million lives.

Re Spymistress: The True Story of the Greatest Female Secret Agent of World War II. By William Stevenson as posted above, I can't comment on that book but I have read another book on Vera Atkins:
A Life in Secrets
Sarah Helm

Alas it's not on special, nor even cheap, but as per the blurb it 'stripped away Vera’s many veils and -- with unprecedented access to official and private papers, and the cooperation of Vera’s relatives -- vividly reconstructed an extraordinary life.'

Whilst Atkins was a highly respected SOE member she performed administrative functions and did not go on any missions for SOE. Where she came into her own was immediately after the war finished and she went to Germany to find out what had happened to twelve of the women agents whose whereabouts were unknown. As Atkins discovers, the facts surrounding their captivity and subsequent deaths are disturbingly shocking and yet she finds the courage to continue to pursue the perpetrators and ensure that they are brought to justice.
