Free and Bargain Non-Fiction in July 2014
A thread for July.
We point out free and bargain Non-Fiction titles to each other. Please don't post any self-published books*, and please do a search before posting to avoid duplicates. In case no retailer is specifically mentioned in a post, it is safe to assume it's for Amazon US. Be aware that many freebies are only free for a day, so grab them fast! *Unless you have read them yourself, think they are excellent, and you're not connected to the author in any way. |

Are you in the US? As with most deals it's only that price in one region (and being in the US it's the price I see), the price will be different in the UK, Canada, etc.

Almost a Miracle: The American Victory in the War of Independence
by John Ferling is $1.99 at B&N. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/almo...=9780199758470 Below is the blurb: In this gripping chronicle of America's struggle for independence, award-winning historian John Ferling transports readers to the grim realities of that war, capturing an eight-year conflict filled with heroism, suffering, cowardice, betrayal, and fierce dedication. As Ferling demonstrates, it was a war that America came much closer to losing than is now usually remembered. General George Washington put it best when he said that the American victory was "little short of a standing miracle." |

Independence: The Struggle to Set America Free
by John Ferling is $1.99 at B&N. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/inde...=9781608193806 Below is the blurb: No event in American history was more pivotal-or more furiously contested-than Congress's decision to declare independence in July 1776. Even months after American blood had been shed at Lexington and Concord, many colonists remained loyal to Britain. John Adams, a leader of the revolutionary effort, said bringing the fractious colonies together was like getting "thirteen clocks to strike at once." Other books have been written about the Declaration, but no author has traced the political journey from protest to Revolution with the narrative scope and flair of John Ferling. Independence takes readers from the cobblestones of Philadelphia into the halls of Parliament, where many sympathized with the Americans and furious debate erupted over how to deal with the rebellion. Independence is not only the story of how freedom was won, but how an empire was lost. At this remarkable moment in history, high-stakes politics was intertwined with a profound debate about democracy, governance, and justice. John Ferling, drawing on a lifetime of scholarship, brings this passionate struggle to life as no other historian could. Independence will be hailed as the finest work yet from the author Michael Beschloss calls "a national resource." |

Nobility Lost: French and Canadian Martial Cultures, Indians, and the End of New France by Christian Ayne Crouch. Published by Cornell University Press. $2.99 at Amazon US.
"Nobility Lost is a cultural history of the Seven Years' War in French-claimed North America, focused on the meanings of wartime violence and the profound impact of the encounter between Canadian, Indian, and French cultures of war and diplomacy." No readers have yet reviewed the book, but it looks interesting. |
