@pghaworth: PW1, completely safe (for now, although I'd wager it's reached EOL).

Had a lovely afternoon - just after jbing my two Ks, my ancient desktop informs me that, due to several power outages, it no longer boots and is unrecoverable. Yay! I spent my day tsing to no avail. Upgrade time. ![]() Since it's old and general useless for anything except backups I'm thinking of setting it up to dual boot and try linux or ubuntu just for fun. |

![]() Good choice, though if I may offer a suggestion... you will probably be happier with Linux Mint. The traditional GNOME2 desktop, everyone's favorite, eventually moved on to GNOME3, which made no one (well very few) happy. Ubuntu has made even less happiness with their Unity shell. Linux Mint has made lots of people happy with their Cinnamon desktop, and Mint is based off Ubuntu with Cinnamon thrown in. Much advisable, and gaining traction. As usual, YMMV -- but I would take a look at it. Also worth taking a look at is MATE desktop, offered by Mint, as well as available in the repos. It is a fork of GNOME2, updated to work with more recent systems, and quite nice also. But I have fallen in love with Cinnamon. |

Well, it's my lack of understanding there. I once asked about trying linux and the person used ubuntu and recommended I start there. Things have obviously come a long ways since then. Once I get myself disentangled from tax season I think I'll take your recommendations to heart and give it a go. Thank you!

Just in the last few years, what with the hugely unpopular GNOME3 debacle, and Ubuntu being no better with Unity... A lot of people still recommend Ubuntu. Not me though. Linux mint is based off Ubuntu, just as newbie-friendly, with the advantage of a GUI which doesn't look vomit-worthy (IMHO ![]() |

Best firmware for PW2?
I just purchased a Kindle PW2 refurb that came with firmware 5.4.0. Should I upgrade to a newer firmware before I jailbreak, and if so which one? I know I can't go above 5.4.5 and jailbreak, but should I go to 5.4.4.2 or is there a generally more preferred firmware I should use?

Personally I'd leave it on 5.4.0 if you have any intention of using collections. |

- - - - @NiLuJe: Should the 'directory rename' be included with the Jailbreak install? (On the PW2 device that is.) That one is easy for the end-user to revert if they don't want it. There is likely to be a rash of refurbished/used PW2 devices hitting the market with the introduction of the 2014 devices. - - - - I added this situation to the FGA as a likely contender for the body of the FGA list. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=237083 Last edited by knc1; 11-17-2014 at 05:01 AM. |

@knc1: I'll look into it, depending on how drastic I have to be the workaround the FW 5.6.1 mess...
(Spoiler: the framework is not running as root anymore, but as framework, which is what fucked us over, because I failed to add error checking around the rw remount of the rootfs, which obviously fails when we're not root). |

Oh what fun.
We get to promote ourselves before doing much of anything. That just makes things a bit more involved. That is a bit more difficult to "get it right" on an embedded system, they probably left holes in the overall plan. Big Note: Check the user id of 'framework' I don't want to post anything more in that direction of thinking. ![]() Last edited by knc1; 11-17-2014 at 07:52 AM. |

My PW2 that I had downgraded and used the jb on - not the one we tested with yesterday - although fully jailbroken, locked with folder and backdoorlock, received an update over wifi.
It is still at 5.4.3.2, and the locking folders that I placed after jailbreaking are still there, but my content has subtly changed. Now when I bookmark I see the chapter underneath, and I also received a letter saying it had been updated, but not the big, bad, wolf update. The other letter. I felt pretty safe taking airplane mode off after our initial testing yesterday to sync some content, and that must be when it happened. I thought only the letter had come through and not an update because I saw no changes - until now. So some updates can apparently get through. |
