My personal favorite was the poster claiming to have gotten eight consecutive Paperwhite Kindles with discolored screens in a two-week period.

So, I've ordered a Voyage. I live in Mexico so it will go to my sister. She can look at it, use it, and bring it to me in February. And, I'm not at all nervous.
You're much wiser than I am! I have cancelled a Voyage order TWICE now, so my current order has a date of December 20-22. I kept thinking with all the problems I would hate the screen and perhaps I should wait.

But Harry's screen looks absolutely perfect to me. My OH and I each pre-ordered Paperwhite 1's when they were first released and I've never seen a problem with either unit. I'm obviously one of the less colour-sensitive types and should just have left my original order stand; for my stupidity I now have to wait until Christmas for my Voyage.

I think some people have more sensitive eyes than others. If that's true, it shouldn't be a surprise to anybody. For somebody that can't see the problem to tell another person that they're making the problem up in their head... that seems very arrogant to me. Who am I to tell somebody else what they should and shouldn't be able to see, with their own two eyes?

And, also, what we see, and what bothers us, changes over time. Last night, the gradient change on my Voyage was bothering me... but, up until last night, it hasn't bothered me at all. I think what really bothers me is that I returned one Voyage, that had a super nice screen, and this one's screen isn't quite as nice. I found myself thinking about that, while I was trying to read my book.

Do I wish the screen was sharper, clearer, whiter on this Voyage? Absolutely! Am I now thinking about returning this Voyage and waiting until (maybe) Amazon comes out with an "new and improved" Voyage? Yeah, I guess so... but my first problem was only last night. The thing is, do I really want to have to wait until Amazon makes improvements? I don't, and there's no guarantee that they will make improvements. If I don't return this Voyage and Amazon makes improvements, I'll be kicking myself... I know that for a fact! (I'm a little annoyed with Amazon for putting me in this position. My brother's Paperwhite2 is awesome looking! Why is the, way more expensive, Voyage's screen so different?)

People's ability to twist words to suit their argument is quite amazing.
I never told another person that they made the problem up.
You guys make it sound like I accused people of making the lighting problem up, which is not what I said at all.
What I did say is being twisted six ways to Sunday to make me sound like an a**hole. Go back and read my original posts. I did not accuse anyone of making stuff up.

javadoo, did I mention your name? Who said I was even talking about you?

The antagonistic "tone" in this thread is OTT, IMO.

There are issues with the Kindle Voyage. They bother some people more than others. It's more than just some "psychological issue" some people may have.

I can't remember, I think you said you had a Voyage. Whatever, I'm glad you're happy with your Voyage.

It's fairly obvious who you were referring to. My apologies if I misunderstood.

Yes, I have a beautiful Voyage with a gorgeous screen that I am very, very happy with.

I said before, I am sad for those that are not happy with their Voyage.
It really is a wonderful device and it makes reading that much more enjoyable!

I hope those that are unhappy with their devices are able to get replacements that meet their standards! It really is worth it!

With what we've learned over the last 150 years or so about the relation of human perception to the material world and to the perceptions of others through the application of the Scientific Method, it seems to me that a certain degree of skepticism with respect to one's own perceptions, and the conclusions derived from them, is required.

They all look unacceptable to me; I am using an iPad Air. To those they said they all look fine: Out of curiosity, do you detect any background difference between the bottoms of the screens and the shopping cart and search icons that Patrick pasted in the middle of the bottom to showcase the color difference?

Thanks for sharing - I had a direct call from an engineer and sent one back to their development department, but was never offered any credit. I's fine, I don't expect it. It's just weird how there seems to be no rhyme or reason to anything they do now.
@sparks, I don't recall the $50 credit from Andrew, but then, the entire PW1 mess is something my brain is telling me to forget about.

Good point. I've never tried it ... Maybe with the KV2, though i so wish I would just get a new reader without ever having to contact CS for screen issues, like it used to be the case all the way until the PW1.

I'm not sure what I said (or typed) to trigger the credit, but here's the except from our online chat –

04:53 PM PDT Jasmine(Amazon): Okay, thank you for the information. Here's what I can do for you. I can forward this to our Developers to review further about the issue with your Kindle. Or you can go to Best Buy and ask for a refund with for the Kindle you bought to them.
04:54 PM PDT Jasmine(Amazon): *for the Kindle
04:54 PM PDT Patrick []: It would be helpful to know from the Developer's if this is the way it's supposed to be, or if mine is just a manufacturing defect. I am happy to hold off on returning to Best By while the issue is looked into. I am also happy to take and send in a photo of mine if that is helpful.
04:54 PM PDT Jasmine(Amazon): Sure, go ahead.
04:55 PM PDT Patrick []: Where would I send the photo?
04:57 PM PDT Jasmine(Amazon): You can just send it here as part of our chat and then I'll just forward it to our Developers.
05:00 PM PDT Patrick []: Here is a photo of my screen [LINK]
05:00 PM PDT Jasmine(Amazon): Thank you, Patrick. As for your inconvenience, I'm willing to give you a ten-dollar promotional credit on your account for you to use on your future purchases with Amazon.

I'll note that in person, the gradient of the "good" one is less pronounced. I used it last night reading in near darkness for about an hour with the light set to somewhere between 8 or 10. At that setting, I could "sort of" tell that the bottom was slightly brighter than the top, but I needed to step outside of my reading to see it. It's not perfect, nor does it have the evenness of my iPad Air or iPhone Plus, but it felt "good enough."

It would have felt "very good" if it was priced at $100 :-) Also, I didn't think the same about the other two units.

Lol. The bottom bulb and cart are a copy and paste from the top ones, of each screen?

I can even see a difference between the original and copied ones that is so large that I'm having problems believing that they're from the same screen.

Yes. That's all I'm saying. Mine was just like the middle one and the replacement worse.

I took the photos. They're from the same screens! The photos were taken with an Olympus mirrorless camera with a high-quality, f1.8 prime lens. No lighting other than daylight. Auto white balance.

All that being said, in my experience all the photos I've taken exaggerate the lighting gradient. I find them helpful for identifying that the issue exists, and making comparisons between units in the same photo, but none of the photos I've taken accurately represent what I see in real world use.

I imagine that if I put my iPad Air or iPhone through the same process whatever inconsistencies in the screen would start to show up. And that's why I'm not ;-)

Yes, of course, but you'd expect the bottom of the screen to be a bit brighter than the top: the bottom is where the lights are! In the "real world", my Voyage screen looks evenly illuminated.
