ETA - on the subject of floaters, I have them and I have them all the time. I am never not aware of them. I do work that calls for a high level of visual concentration, along with photography, which calls for the same, and the floaters, ever present, are terrible and distracting until they float out of view. Wish I could go buy two new eyeballs.

I decided I'm going to return my KV, because the discoloration bothers me too much when I'm reading at night. It's not as big of a problem in the daytime. But at night it forces my eyes to constantly readjust to the different hues.

Also the text is much sharper down near the blue area, and blurrier near the pink area at the top.

Lots of the recent reviews are giving 1 and 2 stars, complaining about the lighting issue. I hope this makes Amazon more aware that they might have to acknowledge that there's a problem that needs to be fixed.

Because honestly, in that picture, I am just not seeing any pink/blue tones. At all.

The irony is that a lot of 4 star reviews if you read them talked about how uneven the screen was but still were giving 4/5 stars.

I actually worried about ordering a Paperwhite when I read the horror stories about discolored screens and horrible uneven lighting. I ordered one. No problem. Two months later I had a problem with it charging and Amazon replaced it. No problem. Then I got one as a gift. No problem. My sister got a Paperwhite. No problem. My personal favorite was the poster claiming to have gotten eight consecutive Paperwhite Kindles with discolored screens in a two-week period.

So, I've ordered a Voyage. I live in Mexico so it will go to my sister. She can look at it, use it, and bring it to me in February. And, I'm not at all nervous.

Yes! You're the first one that has really pointed this out verbatim. I call it more "opaque" which gives the same effect, but your description really nails it.

I saw that too, and it made zero sense to me. For an ereader the screen IMO is the most important part. If you bungle that you need start from scratch.

If it was the Paperwhite 1, then I have no problem believing it. I got 3 that were awful, kept the last (and I shouldn't have). I wish I had returned it and reordered until I got one that worked properly and had a good, even screen - even if it took eight tries. I will never make that mistake again. I'll go to a Kobo before I do that.

I did. I compared the PW2 (new 2014) against the KV and preferred the KV, even with the gradient.

That's why I passed that info on to the group. I didn't even ask for it. Amazon CS offered it to me when I did an online chat to get my replacement. As an aside, I find it really helpful to do their online chats (as opposed to telephone calls) because then you have a record of the conversation (like, when one CS told me to return the "more defective" Kindle).

The problem with the middle one, apart form the gradient, is that when viewing them in person the text was less crisp than the other two screens. The best I can describe from my limited time with the three of them is that in the areas where the screen is more of a yellowish hue (or darker) the text is noticeable less sharp.

The quality and calibration of your monitor are key to seeing properly. Excellent points.

I had the same experience. Couldn't see any defects on my 23" monitor even after enlarging the pics to full screen via CTL-+. But could clearly see the gradients on my 4.7" phone. Go figure.

The real test would be a live meetup. A gradient-aware owner brings their faulty Voyage to a coffee shop and meets a gradient unaware person.
