I think generally you are right. In the same way that there are "monster parents" (in Japan defined as parents who are extremely demanding when it comes to their expectations of schools and teachers in regards to the education of their children) there are also "monster customers" who have extremely high expectations when it comes to their products. On the other hand, some of the two tone screens that have been posted on this thread are so bad that even I was able to see the problem and usually I can't discern any color variations on a screen. So there are some cases of people getting truly bad units.

Just a quick follow-up to my earlier posts –

I've attached a photo showing the 3 Voyages I received. Two were purchased from Best Buy – one was targeted as a Christmas gift – and the other was a replacement sent from Amazon. I had the Best Buy units for 2 weeks, but didn't open the one to be gifted until this morning when curiosity got the best of me.

I ended keeping the one on the left (I think!), sending the middle one to Amazon's engineering group and returning the one on the right (intended as a gift) to Best Buy. Last night I was determined to not keep any, but I'm Kindle-less as my 12-year old has shown a growing interest in reading and my PW1, and I'm pretty thrilled about that.

I'm planning on sending all of my photographs, as well as my Amazon CS online chats, to the engineering group. Not sure what will come of that, but I figured it can't hurt. Between the 10% off I received from Best Buy, and the $10 "courtesy" credit Amazon issued to my account, I feel a bit better about holding on to the Voyage...and learning everything I can about the Kobo ;-)

Oh, and I'm definitely NOT gifting a Voyage to anyone this Christmas...

Hope that's of help to someone.

Note: I copied a small portion of the top of each screen and pasted it onto the bottom to show the color/lighting change.

When the second one was worse than the first, but differently - diagonal, instead of horizontal - I knew my gut was right and I had to wait for the KV2. The KV is a stunner to look at, but for reading (for me) it was a disaster, owing to the screen discoloration and the buttons. I eventually turned the buttons off, but could never reconcile the bad screen.

ETA - I ordered in my PW2 before I let the Voyage go so that I could compare and that's what helped me choose the PW over the KV.
I agree with the 'crying part' which is part of the reason I won't go near the voyage I would be so upset if I got a bad screen. Also my new PW2 is just so good I can't send it back.

I can't read on a discoloured screen, it would be far too distracting. I learnt that from the PW1 issues.

The left one us definately the best. But have you considered a PW2 rather than keeping the least discoloured Voyage?

Patrick, interesting that they are giving you a $10 courtesy credit. That's new.

Do you remember Andrew gave me a $50.00 credit to send back my PW1 immediately for them to send in to their engineers, or so they said. This was the one with the creaky bezel.

Surely any analogue lighting system is going to produce variations? It's not a tablet. If you want a tablet - like experience then buy a Tablet. When I put on an overhead light to read a paper book I expect shadows. Why is this any different? I think it adds a certain retro charm to the whole experience! I had this on my original paperwhite and enjoyed it's quirkiness. I was too slow ordering the Voyage and must now wait till 22nd December. I really hope the lighting is not too clinically perfect!

There are also "Dream Customers", customers who put up with anything, because for some reason the customer identifies with the company.

These pop psych explanations of customer behavior pop op in almost any thread when complaints start about a company.

They all look fine to me too. Of course they are low resolution pics and I'm viewing on Tapatalk. They might look worse in real life.

I could just about live with the one on the left, but they are all yellow-ish at the top. The middle one really is
I have to say that I'm glad I got a nice screen on my PW2 last year so I can just skip the V1, which is a bit of a shame really because I really wanted the PT buttons.

The one on the left looks good to me. The middle one looks the worst and the one on the right looks....eh, ok but not good.
They might look different in person, but I can't see why the one on the left is unacceptable.

I'd probably be perfectly happy with my KV otherwise.
This is essentially the point I was trying to make earlier and got flamed for.
