HD New 2014 Kindle Fires - discuss

Well, I went ahead and ordered a Kindle Fire 6 16gb. It won't ship until Dec. 4 which is close enough to Christmas! When I placed the order, I had a "Pay over time" option that had me pay only 20% down. I had reward points from my visa that actually took care of the down payment. Yay me..

I think I made the right choice. I just couldn't see myself paying $200 for the Voyage when the Fire is so cheap. Now, I get to go crazy waiting.

If you use your Fire for mostly reading, what kind of battery life should I get?

Battery life is pretty good, especially with the brightness down.

I have a question about the 6in Fire.

Can the backlight be turned down real, real low, either natively or with an app?

I use the "Low Light" app on my first gen KF to turn the backlight down for reading at night. But the KF battery is getting flakey, so I'm looking at the KF HD 6 in to replace it.

I tried reading on my galaxy phone, but can't get the backlight low enough and "Low Light" app doesn't seen to work on the Galaxy. I don't mind the small screen of the galaxy, so I expect the 6 in. KF would be a great size for me, compared to my current KF.

Yes all new Fires even last year's version screen go sooo low that you don't have that problem. You may need Screen Dim though for apps with lighting bugs like Nook or Overdrive that have their own brightness controller in them and think you only read in daylight.

What color did you get?
Battery life is fine for reading. But you can't go weeks without charging, like with eink.

16gb cobalt blue ordered. Supposed to be in stock Oct. 27. I see the expected in stock dates have been moved closer, compared to what I saw a few days ago.

Next task, to decide on a case. I use the KF with just a TPU skin, but I think I'll be carrying the 6 in. around more often and may want something a little more protective. The graphgrip looks nice, but it's not in stock.

The dates on the two I ordered for my girls got moved up. They should both be here next week.

I've got a TPU shell on the way from China. No telling when it will arrive. The other three cases won't be here til mid November. I do have a screen protector on mine, plus it has gorilla glass. I'm not worried, it's just a little slippery.

eta - date changed again. Now they are both due Weds. My girls are going to love taking pictures of their Barbies and Playmobil

Is there any way to "exit" out of Amazon Music? I was trying out Prime Music on my Fire 6. Ever since, there is a large bar in notifications. And there is a little symbol at the top, next to where the wifi symbol goes. Nothing I have tried will get rid of either one. I am concerned that this could impact battery life.

Any tips on exiting it?

I was surprised they didn't offer them to match. But maybe they will, eventually. I just ordered the black. That blue looks way too bright.
