Wow. Even in Canada, I didn't get service that bad. I'd have complained to a supervisor. Even if she thinks you're wrong, their official policy is to deal with returns promptly if you're not happy.

I never read physical books with my glasses on either so that's default mode for Kindle, iPad, iPhone, (hand sewing) etc. it's either that or reading glasses on top of my varifocal glasses - it's a running battle with the optometrist that the "reading" portion is never corrected well enough for any such thing.

With one of my first PW1s, I ended up in India. I recall being on the phone with them for almost 2 hours, being thrown around between different reps. I don't even remember what the issue was any more, but it was a very nasty experience. Luckily, this was the only time, and service has been top notch every other time. I posted about it somewhere in one of the PW1 threads.

BTW, I did not know you can request to speak to a US rep.

If it's not a lot better than the PW 1, I don't think I'm upgrading. I was going for more of a storage bump given their sales of graphic novels in the Kindle Store, and downloading that on 3G is painful.

One reason I got a Kobo to begin with, on top of Amazon.ca not having opened back then... AND geographical restrictions on Kindle books being rather right until 2011 or so.

I thought about it, but given how long I've had it (bought in May 2013), decided to just let it go. I wasn't expecting a new device, but thought she might have at least offered a discount of some sort - customer satisfaction kind of thing. That's why I was so stunned. Shucks, that's only about 18 months old. My daughter's K3 (broken screen) was about 2.5 years old when I called Amazon and inquired about repair/replacement options. Amazon offered me a discounted (refurb) PW1 and I took it (I think this was before the PW2 came out). The refurb PW1 came with issues so they replaced it with a new one.

I've had several issues with things I've bought from Amazon. The most recent being an air compressor that arrived with shipping damage... twice. Finally, the 3rd one came without issue. But Amazon tried to refund my initial purchase price until I called and explained that I'd actually received an acceptable undamaged unit rather than a return for refund.

That's the 2nd time I've had to call about a return for replacement where Amazon tried to refund my money by accident. Hey, I like a deal as much as anyone else, but I was surprised that their system would allow mistakes like that to pass though.

I have a hard time with accents as well, because I am not a native English speaker, so that's good to know. During the PW1 returns merrygoround, I also found that overseas call centers employees seem to have less decision making power that their US counterparts, which can make the call longer and possibly more frustrating. For example, a US employee would send a replacement right away, an overseas employee would quote the back-order date and expect you to sit on a non functional device for weeks. My first one was DOA, and that call was extremely frustrating.

They appear to be quite good at doing this, I could easily have got my PW2 for nothing because when I asked for a replacement for it, they only charged me for the original order, but then refunded it to me when I returned the 'faulty' model. I had to contact them to point out that they had in fact still provided me with a PW.
