The biggest drawback for the Kids Edition is that it only comes in 8GB. There's no 16GB option and Amazon doesn't sell the protective case separately. But, Poetic does have a rugged case for $20. No pictures yet, so I'm linking to the Nexus 7 page so you can see the colors.

Looks like the FreeTime Kid Proof case will be sold on Nov. 15. If I were a parent, I'd wait and buy the 16GB and a case separate.
http://tinyurl.com/qjsb3t6 I have a friend that has one of these for her daughter, they love the case. Maybe they'll make an HD 6 version. i-Blason ArmorBox Kiddo http://amzn.com/B00FGAH7PU I can't see how an 8GB tablet would work for any child that has full access to the tablet. Maybe they're hoping to sell them to schools that limit usage. |

Fire HD Kids Edition Price Comparison
Building your own Kids Edition does add up. Amazon is essentially giving away a free year of FreeTime Unlimited ($36 or $60 value) after you factor in the cost of a case and 2-yr warranty. Unfortunately, the Kids Edition only comes in an 8GB version. If you want a 16GB version, you have no choice but to build it from scratch. Fire HD 6 (price = tablet + Poetic case + 2-yr warranty + FreeTime Unlim*)
Fire HD 7 (price = tablet + Poetic case + 2-yr warranty + FreeTime Unlim*)
* FreeTime Unlim: $3/mo for Prime members and $5/mo for non-Prime |

As to 8GB, there's only 4.5GB available to the user. After loading some apps, games, and books, there isn't much left for videos. |

I would agree, if the Galaxy had 16GB. I can hardly believe they don't even sell a 16GB Tab4. It boggles my mind. If I had a choice between those two, I would take the Fire, even though it doesn't have Google Play.

I didn't realize that Kindle and Samsung had a special arrangement. A free book every month? Looks like it has it's own Kindle app also.
http://tinyurl.com/p7d8uep I've got the Android version for Audible on my Lenovo Yoga 8, I don't seem to have any problem with it. But I just download 1 or 2 audio books from my library at a time. |

I'm late to the party, but I'm awaiting delivery of the pink one. And I know it was a silly purchase, but just could not resist.
My theory is that it'll be my go everywhere, do everything device. When I go to work, I'm clanking from the noise of all the devices that I'm toting. 350 in case some time opens up and I can read, Nexus 7 for personal surfing on the fly, iPod Touch for audiobooks in the car, sometimes a bigger tablet instead of the Nexus. But that's way too much gear for when I'm out and about and I plan to load the 6" Fire with a few audiobooks and a select library and I'll toss it in my purse and be done. I know this is silly. I'm ascribing a lot of value to the inch saved from my Nexus, which I love. I already sort of know the new Fire will be kind of thick and heavy and I don't love the closed aspect and my first gen Fire is my least-liked gadget. Maybe the purty colors got me. |

![]() I'm certain the colors got me. I can ignore black and white just fine. But color choices... I'm suckered in... just like a moth is drawn to light. I almost got the pink, but I have so much in pink right now. So I picked Citron. I don't think I have but one item in that color. |

Gosh that Note is cute but I am leaning toward 6" instead of 7 as it looks to be the size of a Paperwhite and that would be great to read with! ![]() |

YW - you need the Samsung version of the Kindle app to get the monthly freebie; otherwise all books purchased on the Samsung version show up on the Android version and vice versa. I have no idea if there are other differences.
