Just checked my Amazon orders and my covers which were supposed to ship October 29th is preparing for shipment, I wonder if they had the date in there incorrectly. But of course no such luck on my Fire 6.

The Fire HD Kids Edition has one major drawback - it only comes in an 8 GB version. There is no option for 16 GB. While that poses no problems for home use, it becomes a serious handicap when traveling. It means you have very little storage available to download videos.

• 8 GB = 4.5 GB available to user
• 16 GB = 11.6 GB available to user

Speaking of storage availability, with each upgrade in the models and OS, Amazon has been chewing up more of the storage available to users.

Standard Models (user available GB)

• 8 GB --- 6.0 --> 5.5

HD Models (user available GB)

• 8 GB ----- 4.8 --> 4.5
• 16 GB --- 12.6 --> 11.9 --> 11.6
• 32 GB --- 26.9

HDX Models (user available GB)

• 16 GB --- 10.9 --> 9.9
• 32 GB --- 25.1 --> 24.3
• 64 GB --- 53.7 --> 52.9

They keep adding those apps that they will not let a user uninstall. Though it has always been a pet peeve that storage is advertised for one size but it is so much less for the user. Why can't they advertise for the user available storage?

...truth in advertising? Heaven forbid!

This is why 8GB is a joke. For all models, the absolute minimums should be 16GB and 32GB. Premium models can add in 64GB and 128GB options.

LOL, I agree, I am looking at that 11 gb and wondering will I be able to fit my standard apps along with my minimum of 5 audibles and still have room left over for some music. But honestly with a 16 gb, you cannot do music, video downloads and audibles, at least not for hard-core users such as myself. So I am thinking minimal music and no video downloads on this one.

I am going to have to steal aka borrow the hubby's Fire and see how much space he has left over to see if I am gifting him with a 8 or 16 for Christmas.

BTW, I put my 2012 in for a trade-in, I am going to mail it off on Friday.

I've found that I can get by quite nicely with the so-called 32GB versions for my travel tablets -- Fire HDX 8.9 = 25.7 GB and Nexus 7.2 = 26.4 GB. And 16GB will do for my home tablets -- Fire HD 7.1 = 12.6GB and Fire HD 6 = 11.6GB.

Notice how the 2014 HD 6 has 1GB less storage available than the 2012 HD 7.

I've never run out on a 16gb, but sometimes my girls do on theirs. We don't d/l movies, and really just stream music, too. My girls are APP fiends though, and some of those apps are big.

I think 8GB is best for those that just want a good eReader and stream everything else.

I find 16GB is plenty for a home/streaming tablet. But if taking a trip, the added storage from a 32GB device gives me ample room for music and videos when WiFi isn't available.

I am in the middle for apps, but I do keep at least 200 music files on my current file and I like to have anywhere from 5-15 audibles on my device at any given time. I have five favorites which I like available at all times and of course when I am reading/listening to a series, I like to download them all at once so I go right into the next book without any delays. I have cleaned my current 32 down to 10gb free which means I am using up to 22, not sure how much of that is used by Amazon. This 16 is going to be challenging, I can see now I am probably going to have to give up my favorites or my cushion of free space.

I also agree. 8 gig tablets are barely usable at this point, forcing hard choices on apps, that's why I promised myself only 16 gig or up from now on.
But from Amazon's point of view they want you "in their cloud" with Prime and Amazon music. That's all good until you lose a wireless connection
