I found the problem. It is a silly typo where I added the entire string many times instead of adding the subsections between commas. The problem affects only tags-like columns built from other columns.

I will make another release today or tomorrow, depending on if I hear anything else.

There is indeed a problem in 2.4 where it decides every book has changed and goes through the process to send the metadata. This is a rather lengthy process. Calibre then discovers that what it is going to send is the same as already there, so it does nothing more.

You can avoid this behavior by reverting to 2.3 or by turning on syncing books.

Thanks for the info. I am syncing books now, which it taking a while since pretty much all of them (well, half) changed when I switched to hierarchical tags and updated embedded metadata.

I"ll let you know if it fixes it.

I'm playing with my Boyue T62 and have a setting that doesn't show text - in Groupings settings Make groups for custom columns. What should it say? Here's a pic:

PL: I just went through all the settings in that screen and non of them have those buttons on it. Are you sure you are using the latest version?

Make Groups from cusomt columns shows check boxes and a reset list button.

At the bottom there are cancel/help/ok buttons.

Have you connected it as a wireless device since calibre 2.1? It looks like it isn't seeing the columns supplied by the later calibre releases and that my test for that isn't working.

I haven't connected as a wireless device at all yet. Just to the content server.

Been playing with the new release, and since I turned on syncing books everything has been working well. No new issues to report yet.

When you started on this release, I thought there were only little things left to do, but you have added a bunch of great new features in. Well done, and thanks a lot.

OK, then that is the problem. Somehow the text of that dialog box has been lost.

The CC dialogs that allow column selection require having connected at least once as a wireless device to calibre 2.1+ to get the descriptions of the columns available. The dialog you are looking at was intended to tell you that. Clearly it doesn't. I will look at the code tomorrow AM when my brain is more engaged.

Thanks for getting back to me about syncing.

I think I am done with "random" feature development for this release. My intent is to next build the CC "calibre cloud" equivalent and release that for testing. I think that will take a week or so, perhaps longer. I will fix problems in the existing alpha releases in the meantime, but I don't intend to add anything new.

Since this is eink is it possible that it's the white on white problem? I'll wait until you have a version with the text showing until I connect wirelessly so I can test it.

Is this the functionality that will allow connection to a calibre server running in the cloud or the functionality that will allow connection to a calibre database that is stored in the cloud?

I remember the conversations, but I didn't realize you were moving forward with either option.

Anything is possible. I know we have had trouble with text styling in the past.
