Not the same thing. Amazon has no real competition in the eink reader space. Kobo isn't available in the US in b&m stores.

With the fire phone, they were competing with the iPhone and a dozen premium Android phones with their "3d" gimmick. Naturally, it flopped.

That's really a joke. A 6 tiny small screen ereader asks for $289 with 3G. Its price gets close to Kindle DX 3G. Amazon dropped Kindle DX, but increased much in price for tiny Kindle device. Such monopoly misbehavior should be punished. I would never buy any Amazon stuff, not to say ebook. If you search, you can find everything on Amazon, you can buy it from other places, and often with cheaper price.

Another more funny thing is Kindle Fire phone came out with price $649. That ugly phone without any real special features asked for $649. How watery mind the CEO it is. News reported it was only sold about 20 thousand Fire phone with a month. Right now, it's only 0.99 with a contract. Funny Amazon, demanding bloody profits from people, but never have that power to get it.

Hey, look at the price of the Kobo H2O, factor in the SO discount and see what you get.

You get a number that doesn't mean anything, because there are a large number of differences between the two devices. And that's not even considering the intangible value of buying from a larger company with a larger and most stable ecosystem.

And even if you could do that, your numbers make no sense. The H20 is $180+$17 tax. The Voyage is $200 with no tax. The S) discount is $20.

To me, that looks like a $23 difference, not a $50 one. Still a silly comparison, but at least its based on actual numbers, and not just made up out of whole cloth.

It appears that the Amazon cover does it not have a hole. It looks like they added a button which presses the real button.

Ditto for the incipio (although it looks pretty chintzy)

The Belkin case does have a hole.

Wow. This really surprises me. Look forward to reading reactions here and checking one out at a Best Buy (they still sell kindles in store, right?)

They definitely lost me at this price point, but more power to em if there's a demand for luxury readers.

Are they really that different?
The screens are comparable: same pixel counts, one a bit larger, the other with pricier glass.
The cases? Waterproof vs magnesium? Same cost.
Card slot vs sensor buttons? A wash.

Just because the two have different features doesn't mean they can't cost the same to build. Odds are they both have the same unit cost coming off the assembly line.

If Kobo can sell the H2O ad-free for $180, Amazon
could sell Voyage for $180. Factor in $30 for the ads and you're at $150.
Which means a $50 premium for the best Kindle in the world because:

1- people will buy all they can make of them, anyway
2- they probably couldn't make enough of them as they would sell at $150
3- at $150 it would seriously dent the sales of the PW2

The key point is most likely the second; if they are supply-constrained it makes sense to throttle back demand by pricing high and pocketting the bonus. Plus, they don't have to drop the price of the PW, which would then ding the sales of the Touch2.

Besides, when your biggest competitor is busy committing suicide its a good time to reset pricing expectations away from near cost prices.

Well, you have certainly moved past 50% for the percentage of made up numbers in this post.

Allow me to bold all of the items in your post that you made up without having any idea of the validity of:

You'll notice that I didn't bold your comment about $30 for ads, because that isn't made up, its just wrong. They charge $20 for ads.

You are going to need another post with no made up information in it if you want to get back to 50%.
