OK. So, I Let my emotions run away a little, forgive me. Be that as it may, allow me a suggestion.

Fact is, Calibre v2.0 is running on XP faultlessly under certain circumstances. Probably depending on their Intel board in use, according to some of the forum contributions.

Therefore, would it not be possible to have an not-cracked portable windows version as before. Offered concurrently but separately on the download page with an "at own risk" adage? It can't do any damage and the Calibre folder could be deleted in case of error without anybody coming to harm.

At least as long as there are hardware drivers for XP available for newer motherboards. I, for one, run W7 which I loath on a laptop, and XP which I love on my PC.

At least as long as it lasts. To date, taken globally, there are still more XP users then W7 (63/17%) according to my website's Awstats.

As about four threads have already been merged into that one, if a moderator sees this, maybe this one too should be merged?

If you want to run unstable software, you are more than welcomed to run from source, which makes disabling the XP block trivial.

See:

I assume anyone who would know enough to want to try this, would be capable of figuring it out.

No one is interested in making a one-click installer for calibre2.x on WinXP.
Kovid has made clear that he is uninterested in making an XP version of calibre. Unsurprising, since he'd have to maintain two code branches and run two build sessions and devote time to merging changes into the XP branch. And all so that people can once again be surprised when calibre crashes.

If calibre works for you on XP, follow his directions to run from source.

Also I am unsure where you get your data that 67% of computers today run XP vs. 17% running Win7. It is almost universally agreed that XP is at ~25%, down from ~29% when it EOLed.

What is your website and what percent of the world's computers access it? I have a feeling that Net Applications has better datasets...

In conclusion, I thank you and kovidkoyal for your detailed help, 2.2 is now up and running just fine. With regard to my Awstats, my website is more for local consumption and down here in Namibia/South Africa there is still considerable XP usage. What with our comparatively weak currency and general supply bottlenecks it's a bit much to expect us to über-consume just for the sake of solidarity with MS's balance sheet.

That's fine. I just think it is erroneous to extend that usage analysis to the rest of the world. Kovid has to think of calibre users everywhere, and I doubt XP users make enough of a dent to make it worth his time.

As a student, I don't like spending money either. In fact, I refuse to pay Microsoft for XP either, and run linux. calibre 2.x runs great on my 10-year-old laptop running Arch Linux.

[linux rant]
But apparently linux isn't for everyone. (Offending my geek sensibilities.)
[/linux rant]

Glad to hear you got it working.

Approx 6% of visitors to the calibre-ebook.com use XP and 4% use versions of OS X older than 10.7 (which is the minimum that calibre 2.0 requires).

Let me re-iterate. calibre 1.48 works just fine on all these older systems and is a perfectly mature and functional piece of software. Use it as long as you feel the need to not upgrade. After all if you are not upgrading your OS you should not mind not upgrading your applications either.

Personally, I would be delighted to continue supporting older systems, and indeed, nothing in calibre's own code prevents it from working on these systems. But the decision is not in my hands, support for them was dropped because of Qt 5.

As for those of you complaining about the fact that calibre 2 runs OK on your XP systems. That is great for you, but I cannot, in good conscience, release software that I know to crash randomly on large numbers of XP systems. Such crashes can in the worst case lead to loss of your data. And if the release exists, it will be used regardless of how many warnings I put up.

If you are willing to accept that risk, and run on XP anyway, you can run from source, that is the extent of the support I am willing to provide for running on XP. Otherwise, just be happy with the nice, free, fully functional calibre 1.48 that will always remain available to you.
