Now reading the daily Flood reports so I don't take the wrong roads and wind up swimming before we get to the lake! Here's the news...

Nah... Nothing stops just because of floods here. People move their belongings to upper floors until the waters go down, drive slower in their motorscooters having first put extensions over the tail pipes, the shops all sandbagged before the water came inside... Similar to a foot of snow in Vermont... nothing stops until it gets so bad that the school buses can't get through. New York City shuts down tight at 2" of snow. The flooding isn't a general, all-over flood either. The street I live on never floods, even when the next street over has two feet of water covering it. It becomes more of a 'plan your route to avoid the deeper places' sort of travel. It always floods in the same places, and does so every year with every major storm. We've been away for a few years, so I have to re-learn the best routes to take to get from here to there. That red truck in the picture is one of our local taxis. Bench seats in the back hold about 8-10, and they don't necessarily go directly to where you want to go, depending on other people's destinations, but it only costs about 25¢ to go anywhere in the city, you get to your destination eventually, and doesn't stop for flood waters!

I just got back from having my hair cut.
For once I had a hairdresser who listened to me. So no layers and no "product" in my hair. Later in the I will dye it myself. |

My back is bothering me again. Still, actually. It was much better yesterday morning, but something must have bothered it during the day. Lying down in bed doesn't work -- the muscles stiffen up, then I move and they hurt worse. So, right now I'm sitting in a comfortable chair, waiting it out.

Remember what they did with the Coup here? Everybody in the world thought tanks were rolling through my bedroom, and machine gun emplacements were on every corner. The reality was that I had to go LOOKING to even find some soldiers! Same with the floods here in the north. Every 4-5 years there is a 'real' flood, with an area 1/2 mile wide on each side of the river under a few feet of water for a few days. But otherwise, it's only low-lying intersections and patches of roads. The water shown in that photo was probably 40-60 feet in diameter, rather than an entire neighborhood. These are 'rain floods,' large 'puddles' rather than river or stream overflowing. Of course, when it rains in the tropics, it REALLY rains... But nobody dies in the rain floods. Most businesses don't even close. They just raise their stock off the floor. But that's here in Chiang Mai... Down in Bangkok it's a different story. That's all low flatlands. Sea level. When it floods down there, the water is covering miles and miles of ground. Same for several of the other provinces. Chiang Mai is mountain country. The street in front of my house is 320m above sea level. There is a large mountain just a few kilometers to the west of me, and the main street from it slopes down past my house, past the Old City, and empties into the Ping River. When there are 'real' floods here, it's the Ping River overflowing it's banks, flooding both sides for several blocks. Stitchawl |

Whew! Just wheeled the trash carts down the driveway - and decided to postpone my walk until MUCH later - this humidity is lethal - "too too sick making!"

I'm griping about having to have the air conditioning on. It's only mid 80's. In Texas, that'd be comfortable, with only a fan or two. Here, with the humidity, it makes the a/c feel darned good.
Today is "catch up" day. Last day of my four-day weekend. Love having a job that's closed on holidays! No more having to slog behind a cash register every holiday. So, I'll be wheeling trash totes to the curb too, Pooh, and doing laundry. |

If I had done all that walking outside today instead of in an air-conditioned store, I would have passed out. The heat and humidity were killer. |
