The fact that I already have every book I've ever thought I wanted, and then loads more on top of that, would make the decision to buy elsewhere (on a per-book basis, instead of per-series basis) much easier. |

Edit for clarity: The plugin won't remove Kobo's DRM, but if you use it on a de-DRMed KEPUB, it'll remove the remaining traces of that format. Last edited by pdurrant; 09-01-2014 at 05:16 AM. Reason: Removed DRM-specific notes |

Kobo books downloaded by the kobo desktop have always been kepubs, haven't they? It's just that most of them also offered an adobe download, too. Kepubs uses kobo's own DRM scheme, and therefore avoids a license fee to adobe, and can potentially be more secure.
The problem seems to be that some now don't offer the adobe option. I have yet to encounter this. The first time I am unable to download a book I have bought will probably be the last time I deal with kobo. |

That's about it in a nutshell. Most books still offer an ePub (either Adobe DRM'd or DRM-free), but some folks seem to be noticing an increasing number of kePub only books. And then there are the books they have that have a PDF download instead of ePub just to make things extra fun.

They no longer list it outright on the product pages, but you can stealth-tell which books are downloadable either ADE or DRM-free by adding the preview to your library, then checking under the title of the listing in your library to see what if any format is offered.
If you're unable to add a preview at all, then it's almost certainly kepub or that weird PDF-wrapper format I heard they had for some academic books. |

The spans that get added to kepubs often affect the formatting. A lot of kepub books end up with extra lines between paragraphs and things like that, at least when I read them in Mantano. The "Modify ePub" plugin for Calibre does a good job of removing the kepub stuff, but it ends up being enough of an inconvenience that I would usually pay more for an ADE epub than a kepub.

I only once ended up buying a kepub, for which Kobo had to refund me. And I can't get obok to for me, which is quite maddening

My experience is that kepub-only is neither common, nor increasing. Of 62 kobo purchases I've made since last December, only 4 didn't have a download option after I purchased them, and none in the past four months or so. Furthermore, I just went to my account on the kobo site and paged through my purchases and all but one now show a download option (so three of four such books were updated since purchase).
