4.5 stars on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Island-Second-.../dp/1468307134
I thought this book was one of the most obscure ones recommended but it looks very easy and interesting. Hope the translation suffered no loss. Apart from Amazon it has about 4.00 points at Goodreads.

The Count of Monte Cristo is my favorite novel of all-time. A fantastic work of literature.

I'm asking because the OP has stated no romance, and by the reviews on Goodreads, Outlander is exactly that?
I suppose that the romance is a relatively main theme, but it didn't hit me that way. I was all caught up in the English vs. Scots. I found myself hitting Wikipedia frequently to look at info on the time period, persons, politics, places, etc. There was adventure and peril and the cultural role of women and the challenge of a woman from the 1940s discovering that she had less freedom that male children. And, oh yes, there was a romance along the way.

I read the 3 Mistborn books back to back. Read this way, they're like one REALLY LONG story. And, I'm a real fan of Honor Harrington. I'm starting book 12 in the mainline, which leaves me book 13 and one each in the two sidelong series (Wages of Sin and Saganami Island).

Truly an amazing book.

That's a ringing endorsement if I ever heard one. I've never read it. I can read in French, but when I do get to the book, I'll prefer the translated version.

I've read some of it (skipped over some of it while trying to compare it to the movie versions I've seen. There is quite a bit of difference in how the story plays out between the book & movie versions. Of course that's normal as if they tried to include everything in a book in a movie it would be too expensive not to mention long.

I've another rather good book to recommend.

The Black Echo by Michael Connelly is the first book in the Harry Boch series. Very good.

Quote:
For LAPD homicide cop Harry Bosch—hero, maverick, nighthawk—the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic. This one is personal.

The dead man, Billy Meadows, was a fellow Vietnam "tunnel rat" who fought side by side with him in a nightmare underground war that brought them to the depths of hell. Now, Bosch is about to relive the horror of Nam. From a dangerous maze of blind alleys to a daring criminal heist beneath the city to the tortuous link that must be uncovered, his survival instincts will once again be tested to their limit.

Joining with an enigmatic and seductive female FBI agent, pitted against enemies inside his own department, Bosch must make the agonizing choice between justice and vengeance, as he tracks down a killer whose true face will shock him.

Actually, not wrong at all. I asked about the page numbers in the different versions and was told by the Luffy as long as one version has 500+ pages, it's OK (see post #44 in this thread). This is from Amazon for the Mass Market Paperback edition...

Because this is 544 pages, it does fit Luffy's request.

You are clearly trying to stretch the rules. The hardcover was less than 500, the 2002 massmarket paperback was less than 500. Heck, why don't you reference a large print edition.
