Brand new NST wont turn on

Yesterday I bought a brand new Nook Simple Touch Glowlight. I opened the box, plugged it into a wall charger and left it overnight to charge.
Today the charging light is green, but the Nook will not turn on. Pressing the power button on the back does nothing, neither does pressing the N button on the front.
The screen still has the "Fully charge before first use" message that it had when I opened the box.
I have tried holding the buttons down for around 30 seconds, but that did nothing.
When I connect it to my computer, I get a Found New Hardware box pop up but it disappears immediately. When I leave it connected to my laptop I can hear the bing bong noise as it connects and then immediately disconnects. It keeps doing this every few minutes.
This is the 3rd one of these Nooks I've bought, the other two did not do this.
As I had to use a freight forwarding service to get this sent to me, I would rather not have to return it unless I have to as the shipping there and back would be about half the cost of the actual device.
Does anyone know how to fix this? Is it even fixable, or is the unit faulty?
Thanks.

ETA: I have also tried using a different USB cable and different ports on the laptop.
I have also now tried on a different laptop, with no better result. My laptop is an older one running Vista, the second laptop I tried is a month old running Win8.1.

I had this happen to me once also. Have you tried holding the power button (on the back) down for over twenty seconds?

Thanks rcentros, yes I have tried holding the button down, with no luck. I have now conceded defeat and packaged it up ready to send back for a replacement.

Have you tried booting it while it's still plugged in? If it was me I'd hold of for as long as the exchange period exists, I hate admitting defeat.

Sorry to hear that. It's probably too late now, but here's something I gleaned from BN.com

Quote:
Nook Simple Touch screen frozen. Please spread the word. This is the solution. The n button or sleep button is easily depressed by the exterior covers or other objects because it is raised up a little. Your Nook Simple Touch can run out of power because the n button is continually depressed, even if you had 50% battery the last time you looked at it. Now your battery is completely empty. Yes, completely empty. Press and hold the on-off button on the back of the Nook Simple Touch with the power cable plugged into the device. While pressing and holding the on-off button, plug in the other end of the power cord into a power socket. Continue to hold the on-off button and in about 5 seconds the power light that had been green will turn orange. When this happens the power light will only stay orange for about 2 seconds. The power light will then turn green again. This entire time you are still holding the on-off button depressed. After the light turns back to green, continue to hold the on-off button for approximately 15 more seconds. Finally, release the on-off button and the power light should turn orange and stay orange. Do not unplug the power cord from the power socket or from the Nook Simple Touch. After a few minutes a message will appear on the screen that says your Nook Simple Touch is charging, and you need to wait until the battery has enough power for you to use it. That´s all. Let the battery charge and you are ready to go. Peace. Barnes and Noble please publish this.

Thanks everyone. I will post an update in case anyone else ever has this problem.
The problem wasnt the battery. As far as I could tell, judging by the fact the light was green not orange, the battery was fully charged.
The Nook never once turned on, it wouldnt do anything. There were no messages of any kind, as the screen never once changed from the original message it displays straight from the box.
I did once very briefly see a message on my laptop that it needed to install driver OMAP3630 but the Nook wouldnt stay connected for more than a second or 2 so it was impossible to do anything.
I chatted with a B&N rep who said the device was faulty, nothing I did was ever going to get it going. Apparently its not a common fault but not unheard of either.
I have spoken to the seller (I bought it from eBay UK as B&N wont ship here) who will send me a replacement as soon as I return this one, and I dont have to pay shipping to get the replacement sent so thats great.
I bought this Nook to be a 21st gift for a family member so even if I had been able to get it going, I wouldnt have wanted to give them something I knew already had a fault. I am just pleased I decided to charge it and load it with books before I gave it to her.
Also luckily is the fact I bought myself a spare Nook a couple of weeks before I bought the faulty one and it hasnt been used yet so I can give that one as the gift and keep the replacement.

Sounds good. I'm glad the seller stood behind it. I guess I should have read the description of your problem a little more closely before responding. Sorry.

Just a shot in the dark but the screen didn't have one those stickers over the front with the message on it? Sometimes new cell phones have that and you have to peel off the sticker. They make it look like the screen is actually on though.

No, it didnt, it just had the usual screen. I was just unlucky to get a dodgy unit. I guess when you consider how many of these devices are manufactured and sold its only logical there will be the odd one here and there with an issue.
I have now bought 3 Simple Touch's and I also have an HD+ and this is the first problem I have had with any of them. It doesnt put me off Nooks at all, and I still rate them far higher than Kobo's.
