I'll do the trial eventually to get the free Audible credit; the books are not for me.

I'm already sitting on three credits at $1.95 each which I have to burn in the next few weeks so I can quit before my membership goes to full price. It's not that I'll have a problem using them, but I figured I might as well wait given my current glut; it'll mean more to me down the line. And if the deal changes/gets worse in the meantime, that's the chance I'm taking.

Three? Did you get the Amazon Local promo from May? I did the CNET promo from Jun, so I'll be getting my third credit on 19 Aug. After that, I'll spend them and cancel my membership.

Sorry, I was anticipating a bit; I meant that I (will) have a total of three credits to spend in the near term, so I can quit.

Must be from another promo, not through KU. Otherwise the free trial for KU wouldn't be availlabe still.

Edit: Do the credits expire when not used? I thought audible works without paying for membership to get credits - and instead of credits you would have to use money only instead.

Some promos just offer you credits, and those usually expire IIRC.

If you downgrade your membership to another plan, you can rollover any remaing credits. If you cancel your membership, you'll lose any remaining credits.

edit: we were discussing a recent Audible promo.

After I posted, I remembered there was a similar promo the month before; so I went back and edited.

After the 19th I'll have a total of 4 credits to spend. I'll wait a bit to see if some cool offer pops up, though I doubt it. Otherwise, I already have 4 books picked out.

So for the 3 months I get the 3 credits for audible from KU, I have a membership? That would mean I have to spend the credits before the 3 months are up since I don't intend to pay anything for audible, but plan to keep KU?

Yes and yes. For those 3 months, you'll have a monthly Gold membership. If you don't cancel that membership before the end of the third month, Audible will charge your credit card $14.95 a month until you do cancel.

Interesting, roughly 80% (162 out of 203 as I type this) say they won't subscribe. I really wasn't expecting it to be that one sided.

I'm surprised it got 20%. I expected less, considering the limited content. I only did the trial to get a free Audible credit. As long as I have access to public libraries with large OverDrive catalogs, I have no need to pay for a private library subscription.

Maybe it is the different content? How many of the KU titles are in OverDrive if any? Could also be that some rather pay for support of indies?

Also many KU users (not the ones here frequenting MR) will simply sign up because it is unlimited and easy to budget. Many, I suspect, will not even check what is available beforehand or even calculate if it is anywhere near worth the money depending on how much they read.

And we have to see how aggressively Amazon will advertise and bundle KU. Fire phone comes with 1 year free prime. If we see a new model Kindle eink device this year, it may bundle with a year free KU.

I don't doubt that KU is a great service for some people. I just think the market is fairly narrow. I'm a genre reader, so looking for specific titles or authors is not that important to me. Whether it's KU or OverDrive, I'd always find something worth reading.

Bundling KU with the next gen Kindle could be a winner for Amazon. Also, discounting KU for Prime members is another approach they could take.

Since I joined I have been keeping track of the value of the books that I have been getting from the program. I am up to $53 worth of books for $10. However I really think that Your Experience May Vary (YMV) depending on how much you read.

I found a lot of knitting books on KU. Since I usually read them once and then put them on the shelf, this was perfect. But I am not going beyond the trial period, because I prefer the library, which is now getting recent books. Although my library quit buying Harlequin-wonder if it had anything to do with the merger?
