Nexus 7 wouldn't start
Just had a slightly anxious time with my Nexus 7. I'd inadvertently let the battery go flat, and when I turned it on this morning it briefly flashed up the usual start page then said "Connect Charger" and turned off.
I connected the charger, and got a blank screen with a briefly displayed "battery filling up" icon, but pressing the power button didn't do anything. I left it for several hours - still nothing. Pressing the power switch would display a battery icon and nothing else. In the end, following a Google search, I pressed the power button in for about 10s and the Nexus rebooted, revealing that it was in fact 70% charged by then. Perhaps everyone else knows that this happens when you get a flat battery on an Android tablet, but I didn't ![]() |

A Nexus 7 frequently requires a prolonged button press to start up.
Incidentally, there is much discussion of slow battery charging, sometimes blamed on an operating system update. I can report a complete cure after I clicked the case open, disconnected the plugs from battery and charging port (some small screws to remove for the latter), gave everything (including the usb port socket) a squirt of switch cleaner and put it all together again. Quite likely only one of these was necessary :-) |

I'm happy with the speed of charging - I just hadn't seen this behaviour before of needing a long button press to boot the device. I'll know what to do in the future if it happens again

Yeah basically the same as a reset pinhole although sometimes you have to hold it in quite a long time for it to catch, never really trusted this kind of reset if I'm honest but it's definitely worth knowing in case of a freeze or something.

I had a similar thing happen with mine. I have only had my Nexus for a couple of months, its the 2013 version. It's my first android tablet, having only had Fire tablets up to this point. A few weeks ago it was just dead. I am guessing something was running. So I plugged it in and still nothing happened after a while when pressing the power button. After a few hours I don't know what I did because I suddenly had some strange screen with start here and some robotic looking graphics. I freaked out. There was reboot system and some other stuff on that screen I just don't recall anymore.
![]() On that screen I held my breath and pushed where the arrow pointed with start. ![]() But like Harry, I wouldn't have known what to do if that hadn't worked. I guess I am used to easy kindle stuff, I never get to see the "innerts" so to speak on it. Haven't had any other issues with the device other than the occasional freezing of the screen which only goes away if I turn the device off and on again. I don't know though if that is an app or a Nexus thing. |

My Nexus 2013 would not restart, no matter what I did, after the battery went flat. I sent it in for warranty service, and they did fix it, but I was well chastised for allowing the battery to go flat. I've been very careful since then to keep it charged.
I did start a thread before I shipped it for warranty service.... Last edited by pidgeon92; 07-19-2014 at 11:13 PM. |

vol- and power at boot takes you to the recovery you can do things like factory reset or clear your cache partition which can sometime help keep the device stable. Basically to navigate you just use the volume keys to move up and down and power to select I think if I remember right you have to use vol+ and power together at some point if you select recovery to get to the menu I've done it a few times to wipe the cache partition after an update. |
