I know. My somewhat educated guess is that Kobo/Shortcovers did something back when the books were originally sent, but it didn't get caught. However it would take both of them to fix it. Harlequin needs to send new copies (the same files they probably sent years ago) and Kobo needs to switch them out. I know it would work because I've gotten them to fix about a half dozen that were messed up like this in the past.

* WVMP Radio by Jeri Smith-Ready
* Mercy Thompson by Patricia Briggs
* Alex Craft by Kalayna Price
* InCryptid by Seanan McGuire
* Arcadia Bell by Jenn Bennett
* Women of the Otherworld by Kelley Armstrong

Don't know if you've tried any of these. They all have amazing heroines and aren't overwhelmingly dark. I especially recommend the White Trash Zombie books. They're way better than the funny titles would suggest.
I got to book 4 on the Kitty Norville before putting it aside. I love Kitty but not the way the author was taking the story. It seems to lose the magic after book 2 but I kept on till book 4 hoping it would go back but it didn't.

Bitten & Mercy Thompson are on my TBR list.

I second the recommendations for the Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels series. Not the type of heroine, she is pretty much kick ass from the beginning, but it has this vivid absorbing type of world building in it. I got lost in that one too. I am still reading the series and I am pacing myself to not run out yet. Some of the books my jaw dropped and I couldn't even write a coherent review. I always said the brain of Karen Marie Moning must be scary inside after reading Fever, but I then thought the same of Ilona Andrews. Holy moly.

The other series I would mention is Chloe Neil Chicago Vampires. The heroine has the from regular book worm girl to kick ass basically as she wasn't a willing participant in her turning. I remember reading that series like candy for the first few books, I could not stop reading. It also has some of the humor I like in my UF. Especially the first books and the friendship between the Merit and Mallory is really nice to see in a UF. Often the heroines don't have other girlfriends or other friends. I really fell in love with all of the characters in this one.
I checked both out from the library gonna give them a try but was hoping for something different than vampires or werewolves or witches. That why I love the Fever series it was so different.

Yeah, most are of the vampire, were type. Fever is in a different league.

There is another series, the Monster Haven series. Didn't I get that from this thread? Or might have been another. Its quirky and has a very different setting from what I have read before.

Monster in my Closet by R.L. Naquin. I really like this series, but I only read I think 3 books. There aren't as many out yet.

I am also going to check on some on Keslynn's list I haven't heard of yet. With so many series out, it helps to get some recommendations.

I love Monster in my Closet. Yes, a different set of characters but not dark or depressing but light and funny. I've read all the books in the series.

Thanks library has first book. I've started Halfway to the Grave and about 30% in. Loving Bones and Cat has that beginner feel to her. Some really funny moments. I woke hubby up with my laughing and scared the cats trying to hold in it. Oops!

Man this sounds familiar. If I picked it up as a freebie, it would be on my goodreads list so let me go look. I have shelves for everything there.

eta: Found it
Are you Lonesome Tonight by Bobby Hutchinson

Its also still free

Thanks for helping me find the book! I remembered the cover image which helped me find it too, because I have such vague memory for titles and authors these days. I blame my young children and the fact that I never get enough sleep for that!

Edited to add--this title is also available in a $.99 box set, that's a much better deal than individually buying the titles in the series that aren't free:

I think I have the first one in this series. I'll move it up TBR mountain. ;-)

I am enjoying the recommendations as well.

I also wanted to add that the Downside Ghosts series by Stacia Kane is one of my all-time-favorite UF series. The world-building is excellent and unique. No vampires or weres. I didn't have it on my previous list because it's very dark - the heroine is a drug addict. I know Blossom was looking for something lighter but someone else might not mind the darkness of this series. There is a romance that develops through the series but it's between two broken people.

Kelly Meding's Dreg City series is also dark but recommended. She likes to put her characters through the wringer! There is also a romantic element threaded through this series.

Her Last Chance (Her #2) by Toni Anderson

Quote:
Eighteen years ago the Blade Hunter found his first victim on the streets of New York City.

As a child Josephine Maxwell was attacked and left for dead. She learned the hard way that life is a constant struggle for survival. She can’t waste time pining over a man she can’t have. Now the killer has returned, and the only person who can save her is the FBI agent she deceived and betrayed six months ago.

Now he’s back to finish the job.

Special Agent-in-Charge Marshall Hayes has made it his life’s work to fight on the side of law and order, even though it cost him the only woman he ever loved. The return of a serial killer gives him the excuse he needs to force his way back into her life. But in order to catch the killer and safeguard Josie's life, he has to break all the rules and risk losing his heart again.

It's another book release Tuesday--which books on your wishlist are released today? Most on my wishlist are coming out August or later. I'd like to use a few more Kobo coupons before then. The only one I have for today is A Matter of Sin by Jess Michaels (historical romantica).

I've just purchased it, and "Once in a Blue Moon", by Delilah Devlin. No more planned ones till end of July (Stephanie Laurens).
