Let's face it, he's angry because HE KNOWS he's in bad condition and he doesn't want to be reminded about it. He wants to be in denial while not dealing with it. Fine, not my problem. As to your other statements, you are right. I can't argue against it. But I think this is a classic man reaction to not dealing with a potential medical problem. |

Of course it's rude to ask Martin the question and I wouldn't do it. Asking stuff like that is for family and close friends only, I think. But he's a public figure and will have to live with the question being discussed.

Unfortunately, GRRM has said that he doesn't want anyone else finishing his work and he doesn't have any outlines or drafts for anyone else to finish them unlike Robert Jordan. At least he had to reveal the ending to the HBO show writers so there will be some kind of conclusion.

With all due respect to George RR Martin and his recent kerfluffle, he's a very overweight gentleman on a rocket ride to 70 years of age; I simply don't see him having many more 1000+ page novels, or years, in him. I look forward to (inevitably) reading Brandon Sanderson's conclusion to the Song of Ice&Fire series, he's a very capable author.

Someone could write an emulator to install in a laptop. I'd volunteer to help take up a collection, but book 4 sucked and I gave up. I tried book 5, but only got about a third of the way through. haven't been back.

Seriously, someone needs to reign in his ego and his words. Part of the reason the books are taking forever is he is just writing and no one is bothering to tell him that it is too loose and writing to damn much. I stopped reading after it took forever for the fourth book to come out and pretty much everyone in my family and circle of friends said it was a disappointment. I might pick up the series if he ever finishes it but who knows. |

Wheel of Time got to be a bit silly. I was lucky and started it when Sanderson wrote his first book. There was a ton that could have been cut out but there was a clear ending to the story. GRRM pretty much confirmed what I had long suspected, he doesn't know where this is going except in vague terms. Give me a JMS (Babylon5) or a Wheel of Time where the thing is outline to death and it is clear that the authors knew where the story was going. There where developed character arcs, plot lines and a larger story arc. |

Even with Babylon 5, though, the ending was rushed because the studio threatened to axe the final year of the series, and then when it wasn't axed, the extra year was rather a mix-mash of ideas.

Losing Claudia Christian really hurt. I could have done without the telepath story or the addition of Capt Lochley because the former was awfully done and the later was mediocre. It was too late to add a new character with a screwy background to the station. The original telepath plot line was suppose to include Ivanova and that would have been interesting although Byron would still have been annoying. Not to mention, Ivanova as the Captain would have been fun. She would have had Bester's balls for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The point is, JMS had trap doors built in to cover contingencies and he executed them. They might not have been perfect but they worked. GRRM does not have an outline to share with someone which probably means he has a loose idea about where he is going but nothing definitive. It allows him to play how he wants and do what ever he wants. He is not even accountable to himself. And people buy his books and say they are great. The TV series is doing wonderfully so there is no one to counter his impression that he is awesome and so what was suppose to be a trilogy has greatly expanded and he cannot/does not write enough to be able to finish the silly thing. He is accountable to no one because he makes the Publisher and HBO a ton of money. Frustrating and why I stopped reading the books and won't watch the series. One persons opinion. This is nothing. Ever heard of Donald E. Knuth, who writes The Art of Computer Programming?

There will be 5 volumes, and the first one was published in 1968. The last current one is 4A. The next ones will be 4B, C, D... ("as many as are needed"), before he starts on volume 5. That is expected to be finished in 2020 (but I doubt he'll make that deadline). Then, he wants to revise volumes 1-3 to bring them up to date to 21st century standards. After that, he plans to write volume 6 and 7, on dynamic languages and compiler design "if these topics are still relevant." He expects to need 10-12 years to finish the drafts. Donald E. Knuth, now busy on volume 4B, is 76 years old. He'll need to become at least 92 to stand a (remote) chance of finishing this series. |
