Inexpensive Kindle Book on the Jargon of Baseball

Cute book, and I'm not a baseball fan.

How to Speak Baseball: An Illustrated Guide to Ballpark Banter. By James Charlton; Sally Cook. Rated 4 1/2 stars, but from only 5 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $14.95; digital list price $9.99; Kindle price now $1.99. 128 pages. http://www.amazon.com/How-Speak-Base...allpark+Banter. (I checked Kobo and it is not marked down there.)

Book Description
This guide to the language of baseball decodes the amusing, clever phrases that pepper commentary about the sport. Packed with witty explanations of everything from "duster" and "rubber arm" to "up the elevator," this ballpark lexicon plays on a nostalgic love for the national pastime while covering ground from baseball's beginnings to today. This humorous mix of definitions and anecdotes is perfect for both lifelong baseball fans and rookies working up the ranks.

Hobart's 79th Armoured Division at War: Invention, Innovation and Inspiration

I don't know what the usual price is for this, but at £0.81 (about $0.99) it looks like a bargain:

Hobart's 79th Armoured Division at War: Invention, Innovation and Inspiration (UK link)

For those who've never heard of "Hobart's Funnies", they were modified tanks built for D-Day, that carried bridges, cleared mines, swam, etc. At the time they were an incredible innovation, now their modern equivalents are in service with every major army.

The Osprey Guide To... series is a reworking of the popular Essential Histories series, now available as non-illustrated eBooks at a fantastic low price (these below free at present)

The American Revolution 1774-1783 (Guide To...)
Characterised as an uprising of the American colonies against the British military, Daniel Marston contends that the American Revolution was pitting veterans of the 7 Years' War against one another.

The Collapse of Yugoslavia 1991-1999 (Guide To...)
This book examines the internal upheavals of the former Yugoslavia and their international implications.

The Greek and Persian Wars 499-386 BC (Guide To...)
Read about the famous battles of Marathon, Thermopylae and Salamis, as well as an ill-fated attempt to overthrow the Persian king in 400 BC, which helped to inspire the conquests of Alexander the Great.

The Zulu War 1879 (Guide To...)
One of the best known British colonial wars and included two battles whose names reverberate through history. At Isandlwana the Zulus inflicted a crushing defeat on the British, the gallant British defence at Rorke's Drift followed and re-established British prestige.

The Korean War (Guide To...)
A significant turning point in the Cold War.

The Art of Betrayal: The Secret History of MI6: Life and Death in the British Secret Service by Gordon Corera is $1.99 at...
Amazon US | B&N | Kobo | Google
Quote:
From Berlin to the Congo, from Moscow to the back streets of London, these are the stories of the agents on the front lines of British intelligence. And the truth is often more remarkable than fiction.

Gordon Corera provides a unique and unprecedented insight into this secret world and the reality that lies behind the fiction. He tells the story of how the secret service has changed since the end of the Second World War and, by focusing on the people and the relationships that lie at the heart of espionage, illustrates the danger, the drama, the intrigue, and the moral ambiguities that come with working for British intelligence.

From the defining period of the early Cold War through modern day, MI6 has undergone a dramatic transformation from a gung-ho, amateurish organisation to its modern, no less controversial, incarnation. And some of the individuals featured here, in turn, helped shape the course of those events. Corera draws on the first-hand accounts of those who have spied, lied, and in some cases nearly died in service of the state. They range from the spymasters to the agents they controlled to their sworn enemies. And the truth is often more remarkable than the fiction.

Great find, thanks. I, for one, like the non-fiction WW2 books. Thanks for posting it.

It shows up at $1.99 in the U.S. A bargain considering the size (256 pages) and the list print price ($39.95 (about £32 I think)). It is at Kobo in the U.S. and discountable; PERKOPOLIS still works and there are also some 45% and 55% single-use codes on the Kobo discount codes thread at the present moment, but they may have all been used by now.

Good Hater: George Henry Hoyt's War on Slavery by Bill Hoyt

While rising from Second Lieutenant at the war's beginning to Brevet Brigadier General at its end, Hoyt consistently treated the Union army as a mere tool for pursuing abolition through direct action. As the chief of the Red Legs - Kansas' most feared and hated irregular outfit - Hoyt used the power of the Union to punish regular Missourians for the evils of slavery.

Maradona: The Hand of God by Jimmy Burns

A biography of the famous (or infamous) Argentine footballer Diego Maradona. This seems to have been written before the 2010 World Cup.

$0.99 Amazon US
$0.99 Barnes & Noble
$0.99 Kobo US

Quote:
Diego Maradona, is arguably the greatest and certainly the most widely-known footballer of the modern age. During his tempestuous career he played for top clubs in South America and Europe, and was a central figure in four World Cups. With the fortunes he has earned from sponsorship and transfer deals, he personified football, both as popular sport and big business. Jimmy Burns pursued his research in several countries on both sides of the Atlantic, gaining access to Maradona's inner circle, and to other key witnesses, such as players, managers, trainers, doctors and officials. The result is a story straddling the international scene, from the slums of Buenos Aires, where Maradona was born, to the huge stadiums of the United States from where, in 1994, he was ignobly expelled after undergoing a positive drugs test. In his rise to fame - and notoriety - Maradona played for some of the world's greatest teams: Boca Juniors, Napoli and Barcelona. He scored some brilliant goals - and cheated with others. He provoked fans into a mass hysteria of adulation, and his enemies into sinister campai. Now, as coach of Argentina, he is leading the country into the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. This new edition brings the story of Maradona completely up to date.

Soccer. It's Soccer! Real football is played with an oblong ball not a round one!(haha)

When I first glanced at the title of the book that you posted, I thought that it said "Madonna" and was going to be a biography of the female American pop star that goes by that name.

Then if the book had been about Madonna, LovesMacs could have mentioned "football" and been correct.

I think you're confusing football with rugby. Rugby is the one with the odd-shaped ball, football uses a spherical ball. I believe the colonials also play a variant of rugby
