Hi, I just want to thank all for helping me get my Kindle working with Calibre again. I was hunting around post #970 for the updated Collections Manager. It never occurred for me to look to post #1 for the file.

Anyway, today I installed it and can confirm that everything seems to be working well using Kindle 5.4.3.2 and Collections Manager 2.7.2, I didn't do a lot, just deleted a couple of books and exported the results back to the Kindle to re-synchronize. But it seems faultless.

I realize that I was very fortunate that the problem coincided with the recent availability of the CM 2.7.2

Anyway, one happy camper here, now I can relax by reading a book or two......

*delurks* so, I created the folder update.bin.tmp.partial in root directory, (F: ) for me. I'm still on PW1 5.3.9 or somesuch and when I heard of collection mess and use alt fonts gone I turned wifi off for good. No biggie as I sideload anyway. But inconvenient, occasionally I used send to kindle. Anyhow, can I now be 1000% sure to turn wifi on and no longer dread updates? I like Charis Sil you see.

What was this film with Hoffmann and Olivier, and Olivier asking

IS IT SAFE?

It is safe.

Amazon could "fix" this, but only with an update that would, well, require you to stop blocking it.

Maybe... I just looked at the first post.

I guess that is the whole "hack uses a different method to stop silent updates on these devices" thing?

Ummm...

Spoiler at the bottom says the update service is simply disabled in updater.conf? -- I guess that should've been my giveaway.

I used this method on my 5.4.5.1 kindle PW 2 and it has remained on that version because of a font size hack I use, am I safe from the big update coming from amazon? I'm panicking because it seems to be big and different from the previous ones.

Yes, if it has blocked previous updates then it will continue to block the update.

No matter what update they are offering.

It is the current firmware which tries to download a firmware update, and fails.

The method could break ONLY if you manually sideload a new firmware.
That new firmware *could* have code to detect this trick and disable it (and in fact, I believe it does)... but until you open the lock, the newer and meaner firmware cannot start running on your Kindle.

tl;dr
The update blocker works when running on specific firmware, not when blocking against specific firmware.

Good to know! Although after this "scare" I realize how vulnerable my current method is, I mean, I don't let many people touch my kindle but conceivably anyone could plug it in and delete that folder, undesirable to say the least

. I will probably implement the BackDoorLock hack too just to be extra safe.
