Nexus 7 or iPad?

Maybe you should read it again with the Apple-colored glasses off. Don't let fanboism make you start chasing ghosts.

I listed Apple store support as a pro.

BTW, Surely you know that the Nexus 7 IS an Android device, and both the OS and the device in this case are made by Google? So we're comparing ..um...apples to apples there....

For you, maybe. Millions of us are perfectly happy web browsing and reading on our Android devices of various aspect ratios and bezel sizes. Don't confuse your personal preference with an absolute truth.

ApK

Sorry, not fan boy here. That statement is not accurate.

Got Android and Apple phones. Linux, Windows and OsX laptops. I do have an iPad Air and iPad mini 2 as well.

If Apple stop making devices that don't fit my necessities, I will stop buying them in a blink of an eye. No favoritism here except a preference to what's more powerful and consistent in terms of warranty and user's experience.

And my statement was given as a former Nexus 7 user. So I'm giving my actual experience as an example.

Nexus 7 screen may be good enough for you and others but that doesn't change the fact that screen is still smaller than an iPad Mini. That can't be change and it's a fact. A bigger screen certainly will display much more when browsing webpages. Ironically, something I really dislike from my iPhone (screen size) but compensates in terms if battery life.

To the OP,
If your decision is strictly between and iPad and a Nexus 7 and you're in a tight budget, go for Nexus 7. Just keep in mind that what you save in money now won't give you screen size later, which may be relevant to you if you want to use it for browsing webpages or typing.

I realize English is not your first language. Consider that you may be misinterpreting my post. Please consider asking me to clarify what I mean before telling me I'm wrong. I accept that what I attributed to fanboism may just be your misunderstanding.

Becca, I trust you are not misunderstanding, but let me know if there is some doubt.

No. It could also just display the same amount, but bigger.
Also, for some people, portability might be a more important factor than screen size.
A smaller screen that you have with you displays a lot more to you than a big screen device you don't have with you because it was too big and heavy to lug around all day.
That's exactly why I said that form factor/screen size could be one of the deciding factors.

Did you own the original Nexus 7 or the 2013 model? I ask because I wouldn't have been satisfied with the screen on the original version either. Besides which, anyone who played with the later model in-store saw grainy video of the UI in place of the real thing, which might have helped to secure floor models but undersold the resolution of the high-def IPS panel and probably resulted in fewer sales.

In real life, the screen resolution and ppi of the Nexus 7 2013 are no lower than those of later iPads and the second-gen iPad mini.

I agree, it's well worth pointing this out.

I have the original Nexus 7, and the screen is acceptable, but we got my father-in-law the newer model, and the screen is absolutely stunning.

The screens of both the iPad Mini and the Nexus 7 are superb. The primary difference between the screens is their aspect ratio: the 16:10 of the Nexus is (IMHO) better for video, but the 4:3 of the iPad better for reading. Your preferences may be different to mine, of course.

Great point. Besides bigger, it could also be fuzzier. Resolution and size (combined) should be taken into account, not just size.

The ASUS Transformer tablets have a native keyboard dock that effectively turns them into a clamshell laptop. That might be worth a look? The beauty of these is that both the keyboard base and the tablet itself have separate batteries. When you connect the tablet to the base, it charges the tablet from the other battery. Very nifty. Also very expensive.

I've also got a bluetooth keyboard for the Nexus 7, which works really well. BUT, it's very small and has an odd, non-standard layout. One or two keys are strange sizes and they are small, which makes typing quickly very hard to do. The other problem I found with this was that there's no UK '£' sign and no key combination can produce it. So, it's ok for the odd quick email, but that's about it.

Is it not possible to change the keyboard language? I have a Microsoft Surface Pro tablet with a US keyboard, but I changed the keyboard language to "English (UK)". Of course it means that what's printed on the keys no longer matches what you get when you press them, but that's no big deal.

My tablet language is set to UK, it was the first thing I looked at. Yet, I am still only able to manage the '$' sign. I've tried any number of key combinations and nothing seems to work. There's no specific config for the keyboard itself, zero documentation and no brand name on it. I can't complain as it was very cheap, but still worth noting to check this before buying for use in the UK

The "£" sign should be on "shift+3", with a UK keyboard layout.

I know, but it will only display a dollar sign using that combo. Believe me when I say I was on a mission to find the correct key combo to make the £ sign work. Nothing has so far and I'm probably going to revisit it when I get home later to try again, all because of this thread!!

The keyboard language may well be different to the system language. It is on my Surface Pro. Might be worth checking to see if they're separate on your Android tablet.

Ahh!!!!!!!! I've just paired the keyboard to the tablet, had another look in all the settings menus and; Eureka!

There's another series of menu entries in the settings which only show up when the keyboard is paired and switched on. I hadn't spotted them before for that reason. So, under 'Physical Keyboard', 'Broadcom Bluetooth HID' I now have the option for switching languages and a few other things peculiar to this keyboard. It works. I can type the '£' sign!

HarryT, thank you for making me re-think this and for your suggestions. Re-visiting the settings has solved the problem. Very much appreciated sir
