I took the morning off (I'm now at work -- shhhh!) - as I grow older, the allure of driving over dark icy roads to get to work has noticeably dimmed ...

My pine trees still have around .25" ice coating - and are doubled over.

Unwinding.

My daughter is cutting her spring break short to go back to school tomorrow and help a robotics team she's mentoring. Before she goes I enlisted her to help me build a PC. I've been collecting components for a little more than a year -- an Antec 100 case and power supply, a Gigabyte brand "media center" motherboard, DVD drives, etc. -- but I was never in too much of a hurry to put it together because my old IBM ThinkCentre Windows XP box just kept limping along.

But, now that Microsoft has announced plans to kill off XP, it's time to get serious.

It's sad when the biggest obstacles to building a PC involve not being able to make out the tiny numbers and letters on the motherboard, not being able to contort your back while snaking cables through to their matching sockets, etc.

It's 95% done, now. I should be running Windows 7 on a new build in a week or so.

I have to finish setting up our new living room Windows Vista machine tomorrow. I thought about downgrading it to XP, since the experience level is like 3.6 in My Computer, but then I'm worried about the popups about XP support ending soon and don't want to have to deal with it.

The startup times though,

but once you get into Windows, it works fine.

Just relaxing at the moment. Spent all of last week drawing frame after frame for my semester animation project animatic and got the okay to finalize it this morning.

I feel so much better after having so much stress for the last three months.

I got back from a vacation just over a week ago and I'm already planning the next

It's been a while since I've been to the UK and I need my fix. For a while I've wanted to go on a "3 day mini cruise" from Amsterdam to Newcastle, where you can spend a day in Newcastle (it's not really 3 days, on day 1 you leave around 5pm and on day 3 you arrive at 9am) . At around €200 I found that a bit expensive. However, I found out that they permanently offer those cruises on a vacation auction website with starting bids at €89! I'm thinking of going late April or early May.

On another note. I've been secretly coveting the new Nexus 7. My 2012 Nexus 7, however, is still in perfect working order. But last night my sister said she was looking for a cheap 7" tablet to use during her commute to her new job. She doesn't want a super fast one, just one that can play a movie, surf the internet and maybe read a book. I'll have to ask her tonight if she wants my old tablet for maybe €75-€100, which I can put towards the new Nexus plus case.

Good luck with Nihongo. Gambattemasu! I'm sooo glad that I don't have to deal with it all day every day now! Of course these days, Thai, with its five tones isn't much better, but at least the verbs don't have to come at the end of the sentences!

So, I finally got around to updating my home PC - which had been limping along with XP for eons ... I splurged my tax refund on a Win7 with a 23" monitor - that is incredible for tired old eyes! Just finished transferring all my files & stuff off the old box, and am heading off to toast my (apparent) success with a Guinness. It's so nice when things actually work.

You should have bought a Windows 8 operating system. It just keeps getting better, and that's where Microsoft is going to be devoting their attention for the foreseeable future.

I've messed a bit with Win 8 and did not care for it. Win 7 is similar enough to XP, fairly logically organized, and is compatible with all my other programs. I'll stay with 7 for the near future.

Plus ... this hardware can be upgraded to Win 8 should I decide to.

getting sleepy. Aragorn has a really soft snore which is comforting, and Strider is purr/snoring. I have all clean linens on my bed (if I were terribly rich and had help on a daily basis, I think one of the things I would ask for is clean bed linens everyday, I think traveling so much spoiled me). I've worked all weekend, and had several meals out with clients, I'm actually quite exhausted!
