In an effort to find out how to do this I played around a bit with the grouping drawer. I think I have found a couple of bugs related to searching and grouping.

How do you get matched and not matched or the matched dialog? I have never seen that before. Is that a special option somewhere?

If there really are empty authors (and I am not yet convinced), then they should show up in the grouping drawer under authors with the author name "<< >>".

You are right -- long press on an outermost item should be ignored. I will look at that before I make the next release.

Long-press on an item in the grouping drawer. Don't bother with doing it on the outermost items (Tags, Series, etc), for as kaufman pointed out it doesn't work properly. It does work on a first letter or on an item itself, which is what it was intended to do.

Either ignored, or matched on blank or non blank. Wouldn't it just be a simple search?

Might be nice to look for every book that wasn't part of a series or wasn't tagged or something like that. I do that a lot in calibre when cleaning up metadata. I can't imagine doing it on the phone, but others might like it.
