Loading a specific file-format to a chosen device.

I have a Kindle Paperwhite2 and a Kindle DX-G.

As you may well know, the DX-G will not accept AZW3 files.

Here's what I wish to do, automatically, when I choose whichever book I wish to upload, after having calibre create both AZW3 and mobi files for the same book:

1) Automatically, upon connection, have my chosen AZW3 files put on the PW2 (and NOT mobi files).
2) Automatically, upon connection, have my chosen mobi files put on the DX-G.

Is there an elegant way to do this?

Yes.

In Preferences/Plugins/Device Interface Plugins, double-click on the relevant(s) drivers(s) and check/uncheck the formats available to the device.

If you don't want to navigate Preferences:
Connect the (DX) Device: When the send to device icon appears, Right click: Configure device

This ends up with the same place and you should use the settings as aleyx suggested.

Adjust the ORDER of the list with the most preferred towards the top

So each time I plug in one of the two Readers, I will then have to adjust it in calibre for that device - before doing anything else.

The way calibre is set up now, when I plug my PW2 in and upload a book (and there are both mobi and AZW3 files available to me from calibre), the mobi file loads, whereas what I want is the AZW3 file.

Just the opposite occurs on the DX-G reader - which is fine, because it doesn't read AZW3 files.

The DX should already accept MOBI and not AZW3. I'm believe the default for the "Kindle > 1 (not including DX)" driver is AZW3=disabled. Just enable it and move it to the top of the list! Then the AZW3 will take priority over MOBI, for that device driver.

And of course the Reading List plugin so the books will be auto-synced to the device.

I believe the DX has its own driver, so this is a 1 time setting

Translation: The paperwhite does not use the same driver as the DX

Correct: The DX accepts Mobi - and will not accept AZW3, so the simple solution is to adjust calibre only for my PW2, when both mobi and AZW3 are present in calibre. Then, when connecting the DX-G, the mobi will simply be chosen, since it can't accept AZW3 anyway.

--- I"ll try your suggestion now about moving AZW3 to the top.

As theducks said the DX and the PW use totally different drivers. Configure each device as your needs require. Changing one driver will not affect the other.
